The funny thing about gardening is that every season feels long while you’re in it, but looking back, it goes by fast.

If you garden for 20 years, that’s only 20 chances to grow something you’ve never grown before.

20 chances to try.
20 chances to fail.
20 chances to surprise yourself.

So plant the flower.
Start the garden.
Try the seed you’ve been saving.

What are you waiting for?

🌱 Every bloom starts with a chance.

Did it get you too?

Also, dance in the garden for less weeds.

What fascinates me most is how a simple ingredient can transform into something completely different with just time, salt, and beneficial microbes.

What are you doing for your gut?

What should I ferment next?

The garden always gives you something to look forward to.

Right now… it’s garlic scape season.

In the next few weeks these curly garlic flower stalks will start popping up, and before they ever bloom, they’ll be harvested for the kitchen. Last round it was chive blossom compound butter… this round, garlic scapes are taking over.

And here’s the cool part: removing the scapes actually helps the garlic bulbs underground. By cutting the flower stalk off, the plant can focus its energy on bulb development instead of flowering. Bigger bulbs. Better harvest. More flavor for the pantry.

By mid-June, those bulbs should be swelling up nicely underground, and I’ll be sharing exactly how I know when it’s time to harvest, cure, and dry them so they last us through the year.

This is the kind of rhythm I love about gardening. Every season leads into the next. Every harvest becomes another ingredient for the kitchen.

Follow along if you want to learn how to grow food, preserve it, and turn simple garden moments into year-round traditions.

Unbelievable… 🤣

You and I both know unnecessary garden gadgets can often be replaced by natural structures. Like my pea trellis. Yes these were twigs from a cutdown tree that cost more than I’d like, but they were better used here than on a burn pile.

This is also the second year. I’m using the same sticks. Talk about reusing materials for low cost. Well you know what I mean.

Happy Gardening!

This bed is one of my favorite reminders that a garden can be both productive and beautiful. 🌿

Right now, I have rows of carrots sewn throughout this bed with tomatillo plants tucked in between them. By the time the carrots are ready to harvest, the tomatillos should just be starting to stretch out and fill the space and keep soil cool for carrots that need a little more time. One crop making room for the next… that’s the rhythm I’m always chasing in the garden.

Along the borders, I planted nasturtiums and snapdragons for a little ornamental pop and added pest control benefits. Functional gardening doesn’t have to look boring.

As the tomatillos begin climbing the bamboo stakes, I’ll reinforce the trellis with butcher’s twine to help support the plants and keep those lantern-like fruits up off the soil.

This is the kind of gardening I love most:
Layered.
Intentional.
A little chaotic.
But working together in harmony.

If you’re not growing this, what are you even doing?

Self seeding, smells great, culinary and medicinal uses…. What else could you ask for?

Chamomile!

I fell in love with this flower last year, and now it will be found in my garden every year from here on out (or maybe in the cracks of my driveway too)

I’ve decided to create a new tradition:
Make chive blossom butter by Memorial Day.

A couple years ago I discovered just how beautiful and flavorful those little purple blossoms could be folded into butter, and ever since, I’ve made a roll each spring. But this year feels different.

Now that my chives have finally reached that overflowing, “there’s-more-than-I-know-what-to-do-with” stage… I can make enough to stock up for the whole year and share some with friends and family.

And honestly… isn’t this what gardening is all about?

Growing your own food. Finding joy in the process. Creating small traditions that mark the seasons - and sharing the harvest with the people around you.

This time of year can feel chaotic fast. One minute you’re transplanting tomatoes, the next you’re hauling compost, weeding beds, hardening off seedlings, and wondering if you remembered to water anything at all.

What’s helped me most is creating little seasonal routines with intention behind them. Traditions that slow me down enough to actually enjoy the garden instead of racing through it.

So here’s your reminder:
Have fun with it.
Experiment.
Make the herb butter.
Start the tradition.

At the end of the day… it’s only plants. 🌱

Ps: I got that good butter from 👨‍🍳
