If we have whole home surge protection are we totally safe from a lightning strike? No. Surge and lightning protection certainly offer increased levels of protection, but nothing can completely guarantee no damage to your property when Mother Nature decides to strike. I have lost power to some rooms of my home, but others rooms are still working. What you should I do? Before contacting a local contractor you should call your local electric provider. Many times in these cases the issue is something the utility provider will fix. If it is not a issue the utility provider is responsible for, then they will advise you to contact a private contractor. I have a newer home and my refrigerator/deep freezer plugged in the garage. Why does it keep shutting off? Most likely you have a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) receptacle, which will react to the additional resistance load created by the refrigeration equipment. Pursuant to the National Electric Code, the solution is to run a dedicated circuit for the refrigeration equipment. My fluorescent lights are flickering/cycling off-and-on, what does this mean? Flickering lights could mean couple of things, but improper installation and a failing light bulb being the most common. Try replacing the bulbs first. If the lights are cycling on and off, this also indicates failure in the bulb, possibly even the ballast. If changing bulbs does not alleviate the problem, replacing the ballast is the next solution. My smoke detector is chirping at me, what does this mean? While this typically indicates the need of changing the battery out, it can also indicate a defective device. If the chirp is consistent, try replacing the battery. If this does not correct the issue and the chirp appears more intermittent, then you will likely need to replace the smoke detector itself. My electrical outlet (receptacle) has stopped working, what do I do? First, determine what type of outlet you are dealing with. If there are two small buttons on the front (usually red and black), then you have a GFCI receptacle. The outlets are especially sensitive to moisture and load resistance and can trip when they sense a ground fault. Hit the test button, which will deactivate the outlet. The red button will then re-set and reactivate the outlet. Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) vs. Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lighting Facts:
If you have been light bulb shopping at all recently, you may have noticed the wide range of choices available, it can be somewhat overwhelming. Many of us grew up in the era of incandescent bulbs, but 2007’s Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 began the process of phasing these bulb types out. While CFL bulbs are more energy efficient than incandescent, they also contain the neurotoxin mercury v***r, can be unreliable, and are prone to failure. When CFL bulbs were started becoming popular, many people immediately noted the higher price tag, but also noticed the life of the bulbs were supposed to be five years. Many people also noticed over the years how these bulbs were not making it anywhere near their projected life cycle, often needing replaced after less than one year of use. CFL bulbs have been tested lasting 6,000-10,000 hours, but studies also have shown turning the lights off and on can reduce this life cycle by up to 85%. The recommended cleanup on these bulbs (which are largely produced in China) is not an simple as sweeping the broken glass into the trash, in fact you are supposed to recycle all of your burnt our CFL bulbs. For more information visit http://www2.epa.gov/cfl. LED Lighting was first introduced in the 1960’s, but remains the most energy efficient lighting source currently available even today. In addition, they contain no harmful mercury v***r and boast life cycles of up to 50,000 hours! The energy consumption of LED bulbs is about half the energy of their CFL counterparts. Advances in manufacturing capabilities and increased availability of components have brought the cost of LED bulbs down significantly, a trend we expect to see continue over the years. The light produced by LED bulbs is much closer to more natural lighting provided by an incandescent bulb, as opposed to the much softer light produced by CFL bulbs.
