It actually hasn’t even been that long ago that I drew new designs by hand. This vanity is from 2019, a master suite renovation in Glen Ridge. Things got too busy, too hectic since then. Still, I remember how much I enjoyed it. Happy Monday!

Take a bath! I am not trying to get personal here… this is about RELAXATION, taking time out- not hygiene. Are colorful kitchen cabinets a passing trend or here to stay?? I love designing kitchens. They require both sides of my brain to work. Starting with a clever layout, check that appliances and smart inserts are well chosen and properly placed to guarantee functionality. For aesthetics look at a mix of verticals (tall cabinets) and horizontals (base cabinets) that is balanced but not boring. Then select door style, finishes and materials. And this is where it gets REALLY interesting. What about adding COLOR to the cabinetry? What about going two-tone? Or mix wood and color? Remember: it’s a kitchen! It‘s Friday! Are you planning to go out? It’s great to go on a date or meet friends for dinner BUT it’s almost more fun to get dressed for a night out. When working on master suites, I ask my clients, how they get ready for a special occasion. Do they have a routine, a ritual? Besides a well organized closet, a vanity with a chair and mirror as well as your fav jewelry at hand— all make for the perfect pre-show. Philip Hooper (of Colefax & Fowler) is soooooo right! I noticed long ago that a “crazy” colored or patterned pillow that I bought, works perfectly in my house. Same goes for artwork. I stopped being surprised. His interpretation matches mine: WE, our essence & personality, are the thread that connects everything we select for our surroundings. I get inspired by great design. I am talking about well conceived pieces that fit their environment perfectly. These shelves (designed by Benchmark) show “respect” for the space they were designed for. Hardly touching the ceiling or the floor, they allow the fireplace to take center stage. Yet, being built in wood and not painted in wall color, they keep their own identity. So inspiring! xo Martina

Another “Look what I just found” moment. Bright purple tones are tricky. Heck, PURPLE tones are tricky! Yet, Farrow & Ball’s BRINJAL is a vibrant, fun color that still contains a certain elegance to qualify as ADULT, GROWN UP. We love using it and are currently working on a kitchen in Morristown, where Brinjal will play the starring role. FINALLY! Spring is here :) I am looking at the exterior of my house, the lawn, the flower beds… You too? I sooooo look forward to fresh greens, sparkling sunshine, warmer air, bird song, soft fragrances… Let’s enjoy! After this winter, we deserve it.
