Happy veggies! A quick Friday morning Salt Hay installation in our home garden. Our garden is small (~ 10' x 10') so we only used a small portion of our bale, since Salt Hay's coverage is incredible.

At first we get down a good layer then go back to make sure our plants are all peeking through and happy. The rest of the bale gets saved in a dry place away from the sun until we need it again.

A few reasons (or many) that we love using Salt Hay..
1) it is super easy to install
2) lasts multiple growing seasons
3) is organic and w**d-seed-free
4) does a great job suppressing w**ds and retaining soil moisture (so we spend less time watering in the hot summer months).

Early planning is one of the biggest keys to a successful vegetable garden and choosing the right mulch can make all the difference. Salt hay has been used by gardeners and farmers for decades, and for good reason..

Unlike traditional straw, salt hay is naturally w**d-resistant, breaks down slowly, and doesn’t introduce unwanted seeds into your garden beds. It creates a clean, breathable layer that helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect young plants as they get established. As it decomposes, it adds organic matter back into the soil, which improves soil health season after season.

If you’re mapping out your garden now, this is the perfect time to plan for mulching!

Here is a great Before & After (& Follow up) with one of our favorite customers. Steve and his wife have incredible gardens in their back yard complete with a well-planned and well maintained veggie garden.

We chatted with Steve about doing a photo/video shoot at his place and he happily obliged but did say something that made us chuckle.

"If you want "before" shots, you'll have to get rid of the old Salt Hay that's down, it could use a refresher but the coverage is still good."
We dug a bit further.. "That's not a problem. When's the last time you applied it?"

His answer: Over 2 years. He put down our Salt Hay in this veggie garden over 2 years ago and when we arrived at his house it was still largely intact. The longevity is something that we promote and one of Salt Hay's best selling points, but it still surprises us sometimes.

Without further ado, here are some Before & After (& Follow up). You'll notice we raked the bed clean then applied our Salt Hay. It looks puffy at first but within a few weeks, with the help of some rain, it settles down nice and neatly around your plants. In the last few pictures, you'll notice how the plants flourished and the garden looks great.

With Fall just around the corner, it's a great time to refresh your mulch and insulate your delicates.

Thanks to Steve and Happy Gardening!
