Getting a proper furnace maintenance will ensure you don't have issues like this. We found a burner or***ce clogged with debris, this is one of the first things inspected in our multi point inspection. Another common issue we find in globe is a gasline code violation. You cannot Plumb the flex line into the combustion chamber, this is a serious safety hazard. It needs to be hard pipe out of the unit with a drip leg to catch any debris before it gets into your gas valve. This is unit was misdiagnosed for years. When we came out we found the low pressure switch bypassed, the txv had been replaced, and then the bulb left off the suction line in an attempt to keep it open. It continually froze up and showed signs of low capacity. Eventually the system was over charged with refrigerant and left for the customer to deal with. Upon inspection we found the ducts were crossed over each other, smashed under a bar, and undersized for the unit. Because of the high static pressures the unit was under, the insulation was ripped from the inside of the cabinet and blocking the air flow of the blower motor. After years of running this way and feeding liquid back to the compressor it sustained damages. We replaced it with a high static unit designed for manufactured homes, upsized the ductwork, and put a twist transition to get the airflow issues straightened out. Now they will be operating worry free for years to come. Airflow issues are the most commonly misdiagnosed problem in the industry. This unit had a lot of money in it and never worked properly. It's not always necessary to replace an old system, but when it is your best option we work hard to make sure it will last a long time for you. This goodman unit had the condenser in the roof and had the wrong diameter lineset.So we replaced the lineset and put a insulated copper p trap on the suction line at the bottom of the riser for oil return. This is per manufacturer recommendation. This step will ensure the compressor is getting oil and lubricantion as it runs and the evaporator coil isn't full of oil which removes its ability to absorb heat. We added a duct transition to the top of the air handler for proper static pressures and esthetic appeal, topped it off with a prefect amount of refrigerant, and set the blower speeds for a proper install. If your contractor isn't cleaning your unit like this before diagnosing a refrigerant issue they're just going to complicate your problem. This unit showed an 18* superheat. This means it's boiling refrigerant too fast in the evaporator coil, and it's sending too much heat back to the compressor. The first instinct of an inexperienced tech is to say it's low and add refrigerant. In this case they added 3.5lbs too much! This could wipe your equipment out in a matter of weeks. The high super heat number in this case was caused by a dirty indoor coil, dirt slowing airflow over the coil adds more heat to the refrigerant. The blower wheel also had dirt build up in the cups of the fan blade. This limits is ability to grab and throw air, it also limits is ability to cool the blower motor. You'll have more wear and ineffective cooling with dirty equipment. We removed refrigerant, reference the manufacturer specification chart for proper subcooling, and got this unit back where it should be with a 43* indoor coil temp.
