Open to volunteers to come join put the final touches on the *new* rain gardens and edible buffer along the Barton River at Glover Town Offices & Library. It’s been a transformative and beautiful week with an absolute rockstar team !! We got all the knotweed ! It’s all gone.

Ha. Ha. THANK YOU to the Huntington Conservation Commission and local Huntingtonians who came out to pull some young knotweed on a beautiful Saturday morning 🌞

In all realness, knotweed is here to stay and keeps us on our toes. Nature has a way of balancing out. But removal is not the only answer ! Planting and protecting native trees to grow up through the knotweed and help shade it out and provide stronger root systems and habitat for wildlife and healthy waterways is key (anyone else a big fam of sumac ?!). We saw a LOT of young cherry and maple trees coming up through the cobble bars 🍁

Join some neighbors for a fun river walk tomorrow morning to remove knotweed that was spread from the flooding last summer! We will meet in Hanksville and walk a section of the Huntington River heading north.

We will be focusing on newly spread and sprouting knotweed, not established stands. Once they get their roots established, knotweed is really hard to remove, but right now is the best - and easiest - time to stop knotweed in its tracks! Knotweed outcompetes native plants, makes river access hard, and does not hold streambank soils well. Knotweed is an invasive or introduced pest plant, but I like to think of it more as an opportunist - we brought it here and degraded the environments for it to thrive, but we can help minimize the spread in the watershed !

Wear grippy shoes that can get wet. The river is pretty flat and cobbly here and water is low right now. We will provide some trash bags, sleds, shovels, and trowels, but you may want to bring your own if you have them! We will be bringing all plant material to be composted in an industrial facility.

finding the ✨peace & joy✨ of design & drawing again after a really hard summer where my focus has been elusive. it takes the time it takes. the last time I worked on this plan was the day my dad died. there’s so much to face fully, one at a time. there’s so much to be gentle with ourselves and each other, again and again. 🌼 may you take care of yourselves and may your heart resist business as usual 💛

Tomorrow !

Lake Eden Shoreland Workshop, 10am-12pm 🌱 in collaboration with Lake Eden Association.
We will be planting native shrubs, trees, and perennials to help restore and diversify this lakeshore from lawn to lush! Naturalized vegetation in this wet meadow will provide habitat for fish and wildlife and help to soak up and filter water from upland runoff and high floodwaters, protecting the health of the lake. 🌀

I’ll bring giving a talk tonight at yestermorrow and on zoom about rain gardens for sustainable sites: come learn how the simple green stormwater infrastructure of a rain garden can mimic pre-development hydrology to support sustainable sites. Rain gardens can offset the impacts of impervious surfaces (driveways, roofs) and semi-impervious surfaces (lawns, patios) that create large amounts of stormwater runoff, causing erosion and pollution downstream. You will come away with an understanding of the benefits of a rain garden, design considerations, and ideas for siting, sizing, and planting a rain garden. 🌿🌾🌸
