Statewide Burn Ban
A statewide burn ban is currently in effect in New York, enforced by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Each year, during the early spring months, the DEC prohibits residential brush burning to prevent wildfires. This year's burn ban will be in effect starting today, March 16 through May 14.
As the snow melts, dead grass and leaves can dry out quickly, increasing the risk of brush fires that can ignite from even the smallest piece of debris. Fire can spread rapidly under these conditions. The DEC does allow campfires, small cooking fires, and other outdoor fires that are less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width, or diameter. Residents must adhere to certain rules and restrictions when having open fires.
