Garden Planning…

“You cannot manage what you do not measure”. I’m a firm believer in tracking my garden in ways that make managing it easier, and help me learn to do better season after season.

Check out my Plant Info Sheet I have in my shop! You can write all the things you’d ever want to know about each variety of plant you have in the garden, then throughout the season, all your info is just a page flip away.

Find the link in my PDF highlight, or click the link in my bio to get to our website!

Mulching…

This spring/summer I didn’t mulch, and that was a huge mistake! I knew it going in it was likely to kill some of my yield, but I was stubborn anyways hoping that my partial shade would suffice. Nope.

For fall we have now amended the soil, and added 3” of Cyprus blend mulch on top. This is a non treated mulch, with 0 pesticides or chemicals used. This is IMPORTANT! Already after two days, our water retention is much better.

When I amend the soil, I water it in generously. Overly generously. Then mulch, and water than in generously again. I want it sopping wet on day one. I want those amendments to soak in and start to pe*****te my original soil, then I want my mulch to be soaked and settled on top of the soil. I do not mash any of it down though manually.

Amending your soil…

We created these raised beds this spring, when we filled them we used 3/4 dried leaves in the bottom, and 1/4 soil mixture on the top. Because of this, we knew they’d drop quite a bit before fall, leaving us room to amend the soil extra well for the next planting season.
(Even if your beds don’t drop in depth significantly, I’d recommend amending your soil after each season if needed.)

For the three wooden beds, we added soil conditioner to add a couple inches of depth.

In all my grow bags, we added to experiment with how we like that product.

How do you amend your soil? I’d love to hear about what products you’re using and where you got them!
