The rescue is over. Everyone is safe. But one important step is still missing. Before the team moves on, it needs to understand what actually happened. Was every instruction clear? Was the right equipment available at the right moment?

Did a handover slow the operation down? Did the team have to change the original plan? These details can easily be forgotten once the pressure of the operation is gone. A structured debrief helps rescue teams discuss them while the experience is still fresh. The purpose is not to find someone to blame. It is to understand why something worked, where difficulties occurred and what the entire team can do differently next time.

Even small observations can make a difference: a radio message that was misunderstood, equipment positioned too far away or a responsibility that was not clearly assigned. When these points are discussed openly, one operation becomes practical preparation for the next. A good debrief does not end with the question:

"What went wrong?” It ends with: “What will help us work better next time?”
