Sixteen years ago today, I lost my dad.

It was one of the hardest days of my life.

At the time, all I could think about was my loss. I was 6 months pregnant and my daughter never got to meet my dad. The conversations we'd never have again.

But somewhere in the middle of that grief, I remember realizing something important:

The loss was all mine.

He was home.

That thought has stayed with me for sixteen years.

It's also part of the heart behind our new *Homecoming* ornament and devotional. Inspired by Luke 15:20, it reflects the promise that awaits every child of God:

*"We will not arrive as strangers. We will be welcomed home."*

The ornament hangs on a tree, but the devotional is where we share the deeper story—the hope that carries us through seasons of grief, longing, and waiting.

For those who are missing someone this Christmas, and for those who find comfort in God's promises, my prayer is that this piece serves as a gentle reminder:

The journey is not the end of the story.

Home is waiting.

Some days, the hardest part isn’t the work itself.

It’s carrying the weight of it when no one else sees.

The skipped meals.
The difficult conversations.
The burdens you bring home.
The quiet sacrifices made over and over again because someone needed you.

You may never hear every thank you.
You may never know every life you touched.

But Christ sees.

He sees every act of compassion.
Every burden carried in love.
Every moment you chose to serve when it would have been easier to walk away.

Nothing done in love is ever wasted.
Nothing done in faithfulness is ever unseen.

“For whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.” — Matthew 25:40

The loss is ours.

The joy is theirs.

When someone we love leaves this world, our hearts ache for the conversations we can no longer have, the laughter we can no longer hear, and the ordinary moments we never imagined would become precious memories.

We grieve because we love.

Yet for those who belong to Christ, death is not the end of the story.

The burdens of this broken world have been laid down forever.

No more fear.
No more tears.
No more waiting.

As much as we loved them, they are loved even more by the Savior who created them, knew them, died for them, and called them by name.

The child we treasured.
The spouse we cherished.
The parent we admired.
The friend we could not imagine living without.

They are whole.
They are healed.
They are home.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine.”
— Isaiah 43:1

We often celebrate Mary’s faith.

And rightly so.

She believed God could do the impossible before it happened.

But Joseph’s faith has always moved me too.

Joseph had plans for his life. He had expectations for his future. He likely imagined an ordinary marriage, an ordinary family, and an ordinary path ahead.

Instead, God asked him to step into a story he never would have chosen for himself.

He could have left.

He could have refused.

He could have walked away from the uncertainty, the questions, and the cost.

But he stayed.

Sometimes faith isn’t believing God can do the impossible.

Sometimes faith is trusting Him when your plans have been interrupted.

Sometimes faith is surrendering the future you imagined for the future God is writing.

The world remembers Mary for carrying Jesus.

But I think there is something beautiful about Joseph’s quiet obedience—the kind of faith that simply says, “Yes, Lord,” one day at a time.

There are seasons when faith feels less like victory and more like simply making it through the day.

If your heart feels weary, Scripture offers a gentle reminder: God does not step away from the brokenhearted. He moves closer.

You are seen.
You are loved.
And even here, you are held.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

The darkest day in history was not the end of the story.

“Some children carry burdens far heavier than they should.”

That is the line that makes someone stop.

Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and anyone who has watched a loved one suffer immediately understand the weight of it.
