Powdery mildew ( Sphaerotheca pannosa var. rosae) is a fungus that can infect rose bushes.

This fungus causes powdery mildew on roses. It causes leaves to look powdery and can cause blooms to fail to open. If they do open, they often look quite distorted.
The peak time for this fungus to occur is in temperature ranges of 70 - 80 degrees fahrenheit.

Shady areas and areas of high humidity are at a greater risk.

Removing any infected leaves and raking the area below the bush is the first step in removing this fungal infection from your rosebed.
Certain fungicides can also be purchased for home-garden use in order to counteract this fungus. Oftentimes, these products will also treat Blackspot disease.

Blackspot is a common disease in rose bushes that can often overtake the entire plant if not treated in a timely manner.

The fungus "Diplocarpon rosae" causes black spot disease. Blackspot shows up as dark circular splotches on the leaves that are surrounded by yellowing of the area. These leaves will fall off, and as it spreads, your rose bush can be left with bare branches.

There are many fungicide sprays on the market, but one of the best rules to follow is prevention!

Blackspot comes from excessive moisture or humidity building up on the leaves.

It's best to water the bushes directly at the base, avoiding the leaves and blooms. Also, plant them far enough apart to provide adequate air circulation.

If you detect Blackspot on your rose bush, trim off the affected leaves/branches, and pick up any infected leaves that have fallen. Spores are released by this disease and it can spread back to the plant or neighboring rose bushes.

Even a well maintained garden can fall victim to Blackspot, but proper maintenance and planning is key to prevention!

"Renovating turfgrass" is an industry term that refers to targeting problem areas in your lawn (Yellow patches, bare patches, thinning areas), and replacing them with healthy grass.

Warm-season turfgrasses are best renovated in the spring or early summer (April to June).

You'll want to determine why the grass in the problem area has failed such as pests, nutrient deficiency, rooted weeds, etc.

Sometimes, a soil test may be needed in order to determine if your lawn needs treatment with lime or sulfur.

Undesirable grass can be removed in patches or raked out of the soil. It's important to till the ground underneath to loosen up the compacted soil before spreading new seed or placing new sod.

Grub damage to your lawn? Here's what you'll need to know!

Grubs are the larvae stage of many beetle species. They will feed on the roots of your landscape and often times create extreme damage. They are often concentrated to certain areas of the lawn creating thin, yellow, or soft patches.

While there are many methods to rid your lawn of a grub infestation, one of the most common ways is a biological control process involving "milky spore disease". This is a bacteria that will inhabit the soil and be ingested by the grubs, eliminating overpopulation. This method is is non-toxic to non-target species!

What indigenous plants are a fitting addition to your upstate SC garden?

*Carolina Jessamine- the SC state flower blooms bright yellow and is known for its sweet smell. Can be grown as a vine or a ground cover.
(Note: while common, this plant is considered toxic and should be planted in areas away from children or pets)

*Butterfly Milkweed- small and vibrant orange cluster blooms, great for Summer & Fall. Resistant to pests! Best for well drained soil.

*Cardinal Flower- vibrant red blooms that provide nectar for humming birds. The Cardinal Flower is perfect near bodies of water as it requires higher amounts than most native flowers.
