Blackspot is a common disease in rose bushes that can often overtake the entire plant if not treated in a timely manner.
The fungus "Diplocarpon rosae" causes black spot disease. Blackspot shows up as dark circular splotches on the leaves that are surrounded by yellowing of the area. These leaves will fall off, and as it spreads, your rose bush can be left with bare branches.
There are many fungicide sprays on the market, but one of the best rules to follow is prevention!
Blackspot comes from excessive moisture or humidity building up on the leaves.
It's best to water the bushes directly at the base, avoiding the leaves and blooms. Also, plant them far enough apart to provide adequate air circulation.
If you detect Blackspot on your rose bush, trim off the affected leaves/branches, and pick up any infected leaves that have fallen. Spores are released by this disease and it can spread back to the plant or neighboring rose bushes.
Even a well maintained garden can fall victim to Blackspot, but proper maintenance and planning is key to prevention!
