Grove City College Fencing Club

Grove City College Fencing Club Grove City College Fencing Club is dedicated to teaching students from inexperienced to advanced foi Fencing is often called a physical form of chess.

We accept fencers at all skill levels, including those who have never picked up a foil before. We teach foil, which is the training weapon for both epee and sabre. We teach a method that emphasizes the importance of footwork and technique. It requires as much expertise of the mind as the body. We are excited to join with those willing to dedicate at least one night per week to learning the art of fencing.

Our alumni instructor, Caleb Thrasher, was interviewed for the Humans of Grove City page. He talks about some of the reasons he fences and teaches. Check it out.

"I think that God has been present throughout all of this for me mostly because of the art form that it is. There is no evaluation, no grading, no pass-fail. I’ve tried to use fencing whenever I would teach others to create an environment in here, where they can come from wherever they are and they can be in a place that is freeing in a way. There is nothing here except you and your technique. No one is going to grade you, or evaluate your performance. No one is going to say you won, you lost, you’re good or you’re bad. So I’ve really worked hard to make this a place where people can take a break from our kind of achievement-oriented culture. I see a lot of the same things reflected in other types of worship and for me this has been a kind of ministry, so I think God has used it in that way a lot. Maybe used it in my life just as something that I can do and enjoy, but also something I can share with others."
