The Gulf fritillary, often called the passion butterfly, thrives in southern gardens, particularly where passion flowers grow. It also can be found in Hawaii. Find passion flower seeds here: ppf.Plant-Native-Flowers.com

This week's Plant of the Week is inspired by the cover of NPSOT's summer edition of Texas Native Plants magazine. It wasn't until someone asked what the hummingbird was munching on, that a closer look, and a quick read behind the cover page, that one realizes it is the Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora). The flower is a perfect fit for hummingbirds thus its other common name, Hummingbird Yucca. But the plant, a Texas tough native that can take any drought or heatwave, is not a true yucca thus its other common name, Redflower False Yucca.

Though the natural distribution of Red Yucca is central Texas, it can be found from El Paso, to Dallas, to the Rio Grande Valley. The plant has been recognized as a great plant for our dry, hot weather and is loved by so many pollinators. It is easy to grow from seed which, when they naturally fall on the ground, will lie in wait for months until the rains arrive. The fact that Red Yucca is unarmed, or at least only slightly armed compared to its cousins like the Century Plant and Spanish Dagger, is an added bonus for gardeners.

As with so many of our slow growing native plants, one does need patience when growing Red Yucca from seed. It can take a few years before your plant will reward you with a showy display of flowers, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Adaptable to a wide array of soils and spectacular in a container, make sure to plant a Red Yucca seed today!
