I accepted a job from a landlord in Blaine and walked into a townhome that stopped me cold. The first thing that hit me was the smell. Rotten, heavy & unforgettable.

It was twenty degrees outside, and the heat hadn't been on in a while; the cold inside felt abandoned. Toys were scattered across the living room, furniture left mid-life, wax candles shoved into outlets like desperate attempts to hide something that couldn't be hidden. As I moved toward the kitchen, the story got darker. Needle after needle, Naloxone vials, expired credit cards, CPS letters, treatment progress reports. Evidence of survival and struggle layered on top of each other. I wondered who had lived here.

Out of curiosity, I opened the fridge. Something I regret to this day. That smell followed me for the rest of the job, soaked into the walls. Stickers and pen marks climbed the walls upstairs. A toddler had lived here. Then the smell changed. Worse, earthy, like waste and a farm. Closets told their own stories: carpet shredded by dogs, wax splattered where it didn't belong. In the master bedroom closet, I found hay and the source of the stench. After a quick search, it hit me. A pig had been kept here. That's when I realized this wasn't just a paint job. It was a biohazard.

As I worked, I kept thinking about the young mother, the widow, the addict whose name appeared again and again in those papers. Tied to loss, to damage that ripples outward. That job stayed with me. It reminded me that kids don't just live in the places we expect. Sometimes they're right down the street, in the clean looking townhomes we drive past without ever knowing what's behind the door.
