A work from my Senior Thesis show at McMurry University ca. 2010. This was my first "large scale" installation piece. I sold the figures individually but the whole piece included the reflection in the great gallery windows.

It may be time to focus on reflection again...

Some of The Story Behind the Masks:

I’ve produced masks for about 15 years in the studios where I work. There have been entire exhibitions with only masks and they reside in collections of one to 30 across Texas. I personally find it interesting that many of my friends have a mask somewhere in their homes.

The exhibited masks started with a former professor who let us make them in class sometime around 2008. It turned into a side business where I would, at the request of loved ones, go to funeral homes and make a mold of a deceased person’s face and sometimes hands. I’d take the mold back to the studio and ‘work my magic’ and present a timeless remembrance to the family. Note that ‘death masks’ are a very old tradition, especially in Europe but also in the States with notable individuals.

The masks I’ve sold or exhibited have only been based on a mold of my own face.

I usually texture them to be aesthetically pleasing and they usually have some internal meaning behind the texture or where the texture is applied or pieced together. I am purposeful in my placement of the clay so it leaves a ‘scar’ as the scars are also usually associated with internal personal memory or thoughts.
