As the colder weather rolls around, there are lots of ways you can keep the heat in your house. Some of these things should be at least checked every year but oftentimes we neglect them.
Drafty doors and windows - Sometimes the caulk or weatherstripping around doors and windows need to be replaced. These are normally the primary sources of your air leaks. It's easy to check this. You can normally feel cool air around the door or windows and you can use a candle to check if you see the flame being pushed. If you feel the glass itself, it's most likely going to be cold and that's ok but it definitely shouldn't be coming from the sides, top or bottom.
It's possible that you need new windows. But before making this step, check around them.
Check your insulation in your attic - If you can see your joist, chances are, you might need to add more insulation. Sometimes the insulation gets packed down so it might need to be replaced if it is old. 6-7 inches in height is the standard recommendation.
Have you ever seen it snow and the snow in the roof melts extremely quickly? ( it will melt from the sun of course) If you look down your street and neighbors have snow still on their house and you don't, chances are there isn't enough insulation in your attic and the heat is escaping through your roof.
These are things that could help too.
π₯Lots of people have taken up wall to wall carpet for LVP or hardwood so area rugs can help bring back the feeling of warmth.
π₯Reverse your ceiling fans to blow warm air down.
π₯Don't forget to change your filters regularly.
π₯Possibly invest in electric fireplaces in rooms regularly used.
