That little hole in the ground? It had a whole lot of attitude.

Today’s stop in Poquoson was for an active in-ground yellowjacket nest. Unlike the hanging nests most people picture, yellowjackets frequently nest underground, leaving only a small entrance like the one in this video.

These nests can go unnoticed until someone walks nearby, starts mowing, or begins yard work in the wrong spot.

We treated the nest and advised the homeowner to avoid the area for approximately 72 hours while activity declines. The treated nest is also backed by our 21-day retreat warranty.

If you notice yellowjackets repeatedly entering and exiting the same spot in your yard, don’t plug the opening, dig into it, or pour anything inside. Call or text us and let us take it from there.

We've been getting quite a few rat-control calls from Buckroe Beach lately, so I wanted to show a few conditions I commonly look for during an inspection.

The first photo shows an opening around utility lines that could provide access beneath or inside a home. The second is a brick weep hole—and this is important—not every opening should be sealed. Weep holes help the wall drain and dry, so they require the correct pest-resistant solution if protection is needed. The third photo shows heavy vegetation touching the house, which can conceal rodent movement and provide protected travel routes.

None of these pictures alone proves that rats are entering a home. We still look for droppings, rub marks, gnawing, burrows and other evidence before recommending repairs.

Late-summer population pressure, recent heavy rain, available food and water, and accessible shelter may all be contributing to the increase around Buckroe Beach.

It’s been an incredibly busy spring and summer, and we’ve been reminded every day just how fortunate we are.
