This job included black walnut, cedar, and ELM (very rare to see around here not affected by the Dutch Elm Disease). This customer ended up with some beautiful pieces!

Poplar, poplar, and more poplar. This cut list was almost completely dimensional lumber. 2x4s, 3x6s, 4x4s, and 6x6s were the majority of what the customer asked for, along with a few others. There were a few logs with some pretty purple, green, and yellow coloring.

A customer brought me some oak and maple to mill. There was some nice character in some of these 1x6s I was cutting for them. Side note: saw dust, rain, and beards don’t mix well.

I milled several logs today in Mechanicsville. The logs were mostly red oak, but there were a few poplar and hickory logs mixed in. The customer plans on making live edge furniture pieces out of the wood.

I had a customer bring me some shorter walnut logs to saw today. The “Y” piece had some beautiful figuring, and there were browns, greens, whites, and purple throughout. He will be using the wood for cutting boards and other woodworking projects. I could see a nice future coffee table in some of these pieces!

I was able to do a milling job for a family in Ashland today. They had a good variety of logs: pine, maple, cherry and a couple different kinds of oak. They had the trees taken down awhile ago, and wanted to salvage the wood for hobby woodworking. A special part of this job was having my son with me for the first half of the day. He is learning about milling and is enjoying helping out.

Sorry for the sappy (no pun intended) post.

This is a prime example of what really drew me into custom milling. This customer bought a Christmas tree with a full root ball in 1989. They, along with their children, planted the tree in their yard after Christmas that same year. Just a week ago they moved out of the house in which they raised their children (now adults). Before they moved out they cut the tree into logs. It was my pleasure to saw the logs for them. They plan to turn the slabs from their 1989 Christmas tree into trays for their children.

I have memories of special trees in my life growing up. Trees that I climbed, made a fort out of, or just admired. I love the idea of preserving those memories forever, in a useable product made from a special tree.

I know the trays that are made from that Christmas tree, from almost 34 years ago, will spark special memories for this family. I was honored to play a small part in preserving that tree forever, as well as those memories.
