Just a short tree safety for the day. Due to our very common high wind gusts here in Central Pa we’ve been doing tree risk assessments. This is something to look for. Tight unions can become a high risk to wind damage. Tight unions usually result in decay, fatigue, cracks and a place for organic matter to sit. This will result in the compromised lead to fail and cause damage. Look for signs of water drainage or sap leaking near the Union. This will rule out any issues behind the bark that you can’t see. For example in the picture posted below. The arrow indicates water drainage. This tiny hole swallowed an 8” twig. That means the inside of the trunk has rot which can result in future failure. There is many things to look out for when doing a risk assessment but this is just one we got to see today.
