It means so much to know that Nancy’s experience reflected our top goals: to bring grace, not judgement, to our clients; and to use organization to optimize the function and peace in a space based on our clients' needs!

I love my networking group, Professional Referral Exchange Camp Hill Chapter! Do we focus on giving each other business referrals just like other networking groups? Absolutely! But I don’t know any other group who devotes a meeting every quarter to learning about local nonprofits. For me, an important part of being a business owner is supporting the community, and I could not be in better company than with these wonderful, big-hearted people PREeps!

No, unfortunately body doubling doesn’t mean have your clone do the decluttering for you!

The idea behind a body double is that it’s easier for us to focus when someone nearby is also focusing on their own task. Their presence alone provides support and motivation for our own work.

What could this look like for you? You could decide that while your partner cleans up the kitchen after a meal, you will spend that time sorting the mail or picking up the clothes that have collected in the living room.

A body double does not have to be physically present. Try setting up a video or phone call with a friend. You might chat and catch up a bit at first, but then just leave the line open while the two of you work in silence. Agree upon how long you’ll work before wrapping up the call.

Part of our stress surrounding any large project comes from not starting. Thinking about when or how to start an organizing project is a near-constant drain on our energy, whether we’re always aware of it or not.

So, pick one day a week when you will work on your project. Put it on your calendar whether it’s Tuesday morning at 10:00 or Sunday evening at 6:30. Just by making an appointment with yourself, you’ve reduced your anxiety a bit. Now when your brain touches on this topic, you can tell yourself, “I’ll be making progress on that again next Tuesday.”

One way to move through your overwhelm and begin an organizing project is to pick a specific amount of time to work. Set a timer for your chosen number of minutes so that you are not constantly distracted, wondering how much more time you have to work. When the buzzer goes off, walk away, knowing that you made some progress and will return to make more progress next week.

Even spending 10 minutes a week on your project is worthwhile. You will build momentum and stamina with practice.

This is just one tip from our step-by-step organizing guide, Moving Through The Overwhelm. Coming soon!

Society teaches us to be ashamed of ourselves if we have a cluttered space. But there are all sorts of reasons why clutter can creep up in our homes, and none of those reasons is that you are a lazy or dirty or bad person.

As KC Davis emphasizes in her wonderful book, How to Keep House While Drowning, there is absolutely nothing moral about the clutter in your house. The condition of your house says nothing about you being a good or bad person. I cannot recommend this book enough with its power to shift your mindset and give you small steps to take that meet you where you are.

At Grace in Cycles, we bring zero judgment to our clients. If you need some extra help and a dose of grace, please don't let shame stand in your way, whether you reach out to us or a friend or family member. Know that envisioning change for yourself and asking for help in achieving it is a sign of courage and strength!
