I have 3 very very large White Oaks on a double lot and I compromise by creating 1 large bed connecting them, 2 beds along fencelines, 1 next to a shed, and 2 in full sun. All are planted with native trees and shrubs. The contrast between the brown and green spaces is an attractive design element. In winter we have Cardinal, White Throated Sparrow, Juncoe, Blue Jay, Titmice, Chickadee, 2 spp. Nuthatch, 2 spp. Woodpecker, Bluebird, House Finch & Mockingbird, Carolina Wren. In season there are Flicker, Robin, Towhee, Wood Thrush.

**Leaf blowers and winter birds:**
→ 11 million gas leaf blowers sold annually in US
→ Destroy 80% of ground-nesting insect larvae (our winter protein)
→ Scatter cached seeds cardinals hide for winter survival
→ December = critical food storage month before deep winter

**What you're actually destroying:**
- 2,000 seeds I buried (4 months of backup food)
- Overwintering beetles (50% of winter diet)
- Ground cover that insulates soil = prevents frozen seeds

**I'm North America's most beloved bird. You're killing me for curb appeal.**

**Alternatives:**
✓ Rake leaves into garden beds (free mulch)
✓ Mulching mower (chops leaves in place)
✓ Leave leaf layer until March

One hour of leaf blowing = one dead cardinal family by February.
