“Y is for yellow
Bold primary colours were used to highlight the structural elements in many high-tech buildings.”

“I is for Inside-out buildings
Inside out was the name given to high-tech buildings that proudly display structure and mechanical engineering on the outside, rather than hidden within the building.”

Thanks to Curbed and Diana Budds for a great read and images about Post Modernism

Excerpts:
“Postmodernism emerged in the late 1960s as both a reflection on social, political, and cultural change and a rejection of Modernist architecture”

“Architecturally speaking, gone was the notion of a singular, universal style divorced from history, and in came...everything else. “I am for richness of meaning rather than clarity of meaning,” Venturi wrote. “I prefer ‘both-and’ to ‘either or.’”

“The love-hate relationship between critics and Postmodernism has led to many demolished structures and historic preservation battles.”

Jackson Po***ck’s Mural and how its home became the University of Iowa from December 2019 University of Iowa Magazine
Watch as the painting traveled to many museums and then returns home to Iowa City

Experts point to Mural as the birth of an entire art movement. The painting marked the moment when Po***ck pivoted away from surrealism toward a spontaneous and gestural style that would be called abstract expressionism. Mural was a watershed in 20th century American art and a precursor to the horizontal drip paintings that made Po***ck famous by the 1950s. "It was a breakthrough," says Stanley Museum of Art Director Lauren Lessing. "The idea that he had to tell a story, or be mythical, or reach into this long narrative tradition of European art going back to the Greeks and Romans—he kind of let it all go. That was Mural. It was pure abstraction, free of the influence of surrealism

Happy Birthday ZAHA HADID

Step into one of her best buildings, and you feel anything is possible”
Zaha Hadid 1950-2016

Zaha Hadid: “Would they still call me a diva if I was a man”

“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Zaha Hadid

“As a woman, I’m expected to want everything to be nice and to be nice myself. A very English thing. I don’t design nice buildings – I don’t like them. I like architecture to have some raw, vital, earthy quality.” Zaha Hadid

“Zaha Hadid’s work transcended a specific gender, religion, culture or space.”

“Her architecture was modern and futuristic with very noticeable sensuous lines, she brought a femininity to Modernism.”

Rem Koolhaus “I think she made an enormous contribution as a woman, but her greatest contribution is as an architect.”

“I approach each building as a sculptural object, a spatial container, a space with light and air, a response to context and appropriateness of feeling and spirit. To this container, this sculpture, the user brings his baggage, his program, and interacts with it to accommodate his needs. If he can’t do that, I’ve failed.”— from the 1980 edition of “Contemporary Architects”

While visiting New York in 2015 I watched the construction of Calatrava’s Occulus AKA The Transportation Hub, at the World Trade Center sites. The experience was the beginning of my interest in this man of creative genius. He is admired and distained, loved for the wildly imaginative creations of his mind, and hated for his arrogance and more. For me it all comes down to the visual experience first, his work is clear and precise art, Beauty in the eyes of this beholder.
Approaching the Milwaukee Art Museum, which sits on the edge of Lake Michigan, was a heart pounding experience. The graceful, white structure against the blue sky and wispy clouds is so simply beautiful. The fact that it breathes in it’s location is an added bonus, too often there is distraction and competition, but this Calatrava owns the vista and it is glorious.
As my beloved mom use to say, “beauty is as beauty does” and the art museum fulfilled that dictum of beautiful form and successful function. It is truly a “precious” museum, full of substance but not overwhelming, a perfect amuse bouche. Santiago Calatrava

Architectures past, a new look....
“But these buildings are made to be walked by and to be seen at the pace of a walk, and when you can do that, you get a chance see the rich details of the building, and actually see how these buildings give you a sense of the neighborhood and its history.”

Via Dezeen and bridget-cogley

Spanish illustrator and writer Agustín Ferrer Casas has created a graphic novel about 20th-century modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, featuring a prologue written by British architect Norman Foster.

"It is a fictional biography of his life, based on numerous writings by many other authors and Mies himself," Casas wrote in a blogpost. "And I say fiction because in this book, I try to show not only part of his work but life, the personality of the architect. What made him a great architect and what he left behind in his ambition to build."

Reposting a great road trip with several architectural highlights!

Columbus, Indiana,
the Athens of the Prairie, Architectural Paradise....
We are leaving the raw "nature" and pristine beaches of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Our Brutalist dwelling with a view of the Atlantic is behind us and the minimal, and dramatically simplistic Mid Century Modern Architects home near Iowa City is our destination.
Along the way we stopped in Charleston, South Carolina and drank in the southern charm and vernacular architecture and traveled on to Columbus, Indiana for an additional mcm architecture fix (visited there 9 months ago...it's that worthwhile).
