🌳 WHAT TO PRUNE TODAY in the Hill Country 🌳
Howdy, neighbors! Bo Masters Trees here with your mid-May pruning rundown for Johnson City.
🚫 DO NOT PRUNE: Live Oaks & Red Oaks — We're in the middle of OAK WILT season (Feb 1 – July 1). A fresh cut on an oak right now is an open invitation to one of the deadliest tree diseases in Central Texas. If you MUST cut (storm damage), seal the wound IMMEDIATELY with pruning sealer or latex paint.
✅ GOOD TO PRUNE: Spring bloomers that have finished flowering (mountain laurel, redbud, Mexican plum) · Crepe myrtles (light shaping only — no "crepe murder"!) · Fruit trees (thin peach, plum & fig canopies) · Dead/damaged wood on any tree but oaks · Woody herbs like rosemary & sage.

When the storms actually arrived, severe thunderstorms came through Central Texas Sunday evening as a cold front arrived, knocking down trees and tossing pea-sized hail. South Austin residents reported broken tree limbs after wind gusts moved through the area, and Pedernales Electric was reporting 72 active outages by 11 p.m. Roughly 1,200 Oncor customers in Pflugerville lost power, with estimated restoration around midnight. These folks heard their 100 year old Live Oak split and break! So they called the IAH Certified team of Bo Masters Trees to come take care of it so that this beautiful tree will again strive and live! Got damaged trees? Today we prune for filtered light show the grass didn't shade out underneath large trees. We did that by looking for a lateral weight reduction, infestations of water, sprouts and deadwood. 🌳 Pruning Oak Trees in Texas (June–October) 🌳

Pruning oak trees in Texas during the summer months (June–October) requires extra caution. This is peak season for oak wilt transmission, so avoiding pruning is always best unless absolutely necessary.

⚠️ If pruning MUST be done (storm damage, safety hazards), follow proper techniques to protect your trees:

✔️ Make clean, proper cuts just outside the branch collar
✔️ Avoid excessive pruning—only remove what’s necessary
✔️ Disinfect tools between trees
✔️ IMMEDIATELY seal all fresh cuts with pruning paint
✔️ Never top your oak trees

Oak wilt spreads easily this time of year through beetles attracted to fresh cuts. One wrong move can put even healthy oaks at serious risk.

When in doubt, wait until dormant season—or call a professional to handle it safely and correctly.

Where were we (Bo Masters Trees & Crew) Friday??
Huge red oak over the swimming pool and back patio area and coincidentally they were having a party that afternoon. The tree has a large vertical wound from a previous lightning strike and some other structural challenges per my recommendation we reduced lateral weight over the house and pool while maintaining structural integrity by not making large redundant wounds. We did some standard pruning as well that will help with some wind sail effect therefore be decent the chance of failure. This is how you manage large trees in proximity to livelihood.
