The “Vanishing Island” of Canada 🌲🌊
In July 2026, boaters on Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia spotted something that looked almost impossible—a massive, tree-covered island floating across the water.
Satellite imagery later confirmed the mysterious landmass was real. It measured roughly 70 metres wide and 140 metres long, making it about the size of two football fields.
But just weeks later, the strange “island” vanished.
By August 5, it was no longer where it had first been photographed. It probably hadn’t sunk, though. BC Hydro believes the object was actually a huge floating mat of woody debris, soil and vegetation that had gradually become anchored together by trees and plants.
Exceptionally high water levels may have helped loosen the mass from the shoreline. Once free, wind and currents likely pushed the enormous floating ecosystem across the reservoir.
And the strangest part? Later satellite imagery reportedly spotted the wandering mass more than 30 kilometres away, near another shoreline.
So Canada didn’t exactly discover a new island—it accidentally got a giant floating forest that decided to go on an adventure. 🌲🌊
