When I founded the company back in 2005, my intention was to cater solely to the interior design market. After working as an interior designer and through my own research, I found that most rug companies carried large inventories of dated-looking designs, and worse, offered minimal customer service. Our goal at NIBA Designs is to offer an array of beautiful designs, with new designs being introduc

ed every few months. We also provide unparalleled personal service. NIBA rugs salespeople are all trained in interior design, and understand first-hand the pressure and time constraints designers face. Our job is to make your lives easier- from same-day service for quotations and renderings, to free catalogues and samples for your libraries, to creating custom rug designs for your projects. We pride ourselves on our flexibility in composition, design and price points. We offer thousands of color choices, in materials such as wool, silk, hemp, linen, bamboo, allo, tencel, nylon, cotton, sunpat and more. Continual development of new fibers and techniques is very important to us. And so are the relationships with our factories. We visit each factory once a year, and work very closely with the owners and their staff. Each factory must not only meet acceptable standards for every aspect of its working conditions, but it must also be in alliance with GoodWeave (formerly known as RugMark) to ensure that there is no child labor used in the manufacturing of our rugs. By developing strong personal relationships with our factories, we are able to deliver superior service and excellent lead times. In return, we keep the ancient traditions of rug-making alive while keeping people employed and offering help in countries of great need. Old-world craft, reimagined.

The Luxe Collection draws inspiration from Portuguese textiles and embroidery, translating their intricate patterns and details into richly layered rugs made by hand.

Wool, silk, h**p and allo come together through looping, tweeding, abrash and carving—techniques that give each design its depth, dimension and unmistakable texture. Each rug is created using centuries-old traditions of spinning, carding, dyeing and hand knotting, then customized through color, scale and fiber for the space it will call home.

Named for places throughout Portugal, Luxe is a celebration of craftsmanship that feels as relevant today as the traditions that inspired it.

Did you know that in a Tibetan knot rug, the yarn is looped around a metal rod as the rug is woven. The diameter of that rod helps determine the height and thickness of the pile—giving the weaver incredible control over the finished texture.

And here’s the part you may not realize: those loops don’t become cut pile until the weaver slices directly along the rod with an extremely sharp blade.

Leave the loops intact, and you have loop pile. Cut them open, and you have cut pile.

Same technique. One precise decision. A completely different texture underfoot.

It’s one of the many small details in hand-knotted rug making that ultimately determines how a rug looks, feels, and performs.

This month, we’re leaning into Rustic Earth, a fall interior color palette inspired by warm terra-cotta tones, deeper olive greens, and rich, grounded neutrals that signal the shift into autumn.

Let’s clear this one up once and for all. 👀

We hear it all the time: “I don’t like Tencel.” But after a few questions, we often discover that what someone experienced wasn’t actually Tencel at all—it was viscose or another cellulose-based fiber being sold as something similar.

And there’s a BIG difference.

At NIBA, we’ve worked with Tencel for years. We know the fiber, we know how it performs, and we know exactly what we’re sourcing.

Beth demonstrates one of those differences here: add water to real Tencel and watch it bead up and roll right off. 💧 With many cellulose-based fibers, that moisture is absorbed quickly and can leave behind a visible spot.

So if you’ve sworn off Tencel because of a past experience, it might be time to reconsider what you were actually sold.

Fiber matters. Sourcing matters. And experience definitely matters.
