Happy Earth Day! 🌿🌎🪵

These days, I spend as much time in my garden as possible. It’s where my imagination runs wild, where I can use my nurturing instincts to take care of my (plant) babies, where I can dream big and imagine a future full of community. I can see the future relationships with neighbors, where we trade papayas for ceramics. Where we trade seeds and recipes. Where we talk through our fence and say good morning and compliment each other’s gardens.

I love how the land/‘aina/tierra can bring us together, because it’s where we were meant to be all along. Happy Earth Day to all of us, because our bodies are a part of this land too. We are not meant to be separate: we are meant to connect, to caretake, and to enjoy this Earth while we are here. 🏞🌞🏜🏝🌌

Here is my newest compost pile that I made with .weinstein for Earth Day campaign. Mulch, shredded paper, banana leaves, food scraps, and some chicken wire. Keep it simple, get outside!

I like to use materials from the garden that I already have when I’m making garden beds. A couple years ago, I cut down a palm tree that I didn’t want anymore and used the trunk as a garden bed wall. It’s been super helpful and is now finally decaying and will need to be replaced soon. 🪵🌴🍄

Over the last month or so, I’ve been seeing so many mushrooms grow out of it. It’s almost like seeing flowers bloom, but they only last a couple days at the most. My favorite ones so far have been the ones in the second photo. That is a small blade of grass for size reference. I love when things decay 🍂🍁🌾

It’s always fun to do little projects in the garden to clean up overgrown areas and make them look new again. 🪴🪴🪴 Today my roommate .longlegs and I cleared out the old vines and grass, repotted the snake plant and cactus, built a little platform, and rearranged a bunch of snake plant and chaya to make it look nice. I love it! Swipe for the before… ✨✨✨

Swipe to see the before! 🌿

After working and going to school for a month straight, I finally had a day to spend in the garden. I spent the whole day clearing space for and installing my first greenhouse, I’m so excited! I got the turf for free from my work, got the greenhouse for free from .luka and , and used items I already for shelving and table space. Now I finally have a dry space to keep my tools out of the rain and accessible in the garden.

This garden has shown me patience and that the seeds I plant will show up for me later in the best way. I’ve watched this space go from being all dirt to a thriving ecosystem in a matter of years and I’m loving every minute of it 🌱🪵🍃🪱🦎

My love for composting is so great, for so much more that what’s on the surface. Composting, to me, is recognizing that I am a part of nature. That I belong in this world, and that I have a responsibility to be a caretaker of this land. I get to see, talk to, and share with people in my community. I get to know the bugs, wood chips, leaves and food scraps that will work together to decompose and transform into something much more useful. Billions of invisible microbes that play their part. Building something and going through growing pains on the path to knowledge. Following my passions and allowing myself to rest.

Composting, to me, has been a journey of getting to know myself through tending the land, and therefore tending to myself. I’ve learned that when I water myself, give myself enough nutrients and time, I will grow. 🌱

Kāka’o ‘Ōiwi

First time at a lo’i. Grateful to be able to witness and tend to these fields. Kalo is so important. It is our responsibility to make sure land stays in Hawaiian hands and all land is returned to them so they can continue caring for it.

Link in bio to help buy the property his family has been living on and restoring for 7 years. The landlords are planning on selling to developers, let’s make sure that doesn’t happen. You can make a donation to help and spread the word! ❤️

How beautiful are thee food scraps! 😍 This definitely does not belong in a landfill or incinerator. Here in Hawaii, the community composting movement is well underway. Support for food waste diversion is high and people are willing and ready to participate. Unfortunately, there are some barriers written into law that are well overdue for some changes.

Stay tuned for action items on policy and to see successful projects already up and running. I personally want to see state funded food waste collection services in the future, don’t you?! 😉

B O K A S H I ✨

Fermented rice bran used to inoculate food waste and speed up the composting process. Ingredients include rice bran (or wheat bran, spent hops, etc.), molasses, EM (effective microorganisms), and water! This super charged powder is a great amendment for your soil and will increase the microbiome, encouraging plant growth and overall health of the soil. Benefits of composting with bokashi include: speeding up he composting process, can safely compost meat and dairy, and reduced smell 🦠🍌🥬🍅🍗

DM for more information on how to use and where to purchase. Happy composting!

Sharing knowledge 🗣

Workshops and volunteer days are my favorite. I love being able to work together and share our passions with one another. We all have so much to learn and I was able to exchange so much with and this day. We shared how food scraps are not supposed to go in the trash, how to make bokashi, build compost piles, and how to inspire your community to do the same. Fast forward to today and Kumu Piper has secured multiple grants for their compost program and created a huge ripple effect in her community.

I’m so grateful for experiences like these that create meaningful relationships with each other and the land. 🤲🏻👩🏻‍🌾🌳

Hey everyone! 🌞 It’s D. AKA Danielle. 🌿 Plants, gardening, and composting are very high on my list of things that make me happy. I’ve been lucky enough to learn from some of my favorite people over the last decade and I’m finally ready to share my knowledge with you all!
I’ll be talking about collecting seeds, propagating, composting, growing native species, harvesting, recipes from the garden and much more. I’ll also be selling plants, seeds, bokashi (for composting), herbs, and produce.
Being able to grow food in my backyard has been one my favorite projects so far. I’ve come to intimately know every corner, the different plants, the soil, all the insects and animals that now flourish in my garden.
Welcome to my page, stay tuned for more. Hope you enjoy! ✨✨✨
