Well just like that spring is coming to an end! I’m so excited for all that we have grown in this season and am looking forward, while fully prepared for the summer Heat Here in Texas! Glory to God for giving me a heart to grow and make sure my family and community have some where to get some fresh foods when needed.

Squash vine borers can wipe out your crop overnight. Here's a simple trick: wrap the base of the stem with aluminum foil.

Why it works:
✅ Creates a physical barrier against female borers laying eggs
✅ Prevents larvae from burrowing into the stem
✅ Safe, cheap, and chemical-free

Apply foil when plants are young—loosely wrap from just above the soil up a few inches. Leave room for stem growth.

Bonus: Foil can also reflect sunlight and deter some beetles.

May = GO time in the garden! 🌱☀️ Here’s what to plant RIGHT NOW (beans, peas, artichokes) and exactly how to do it.

BEANS (bush or pole)
🌱 Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 3 inches apart. Rows 18-24 inches apart.
💧 Water at base – wet leaves = disease.
🧪 Fertilizer: Low-nitrogen (5-10-10) – beans make their own nitrogen!

PEAS (sugar snap or shelling)
🌱 Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 2 inches apart. Need trellis or support.
💧 Keep soil moist but not soaked.
🧪 Fertilizer: Balanced (10-10-10) at planting only – then let them ride.

**ARTICHOKES (perennial!)
🌱 Transplant seedlings 3-4 feet apart. Full sun.
💧 Water deeply twice a week. Mulch heavily.
🧪 Fertilizer: Nitrogen-rich (21-0-0) or compost tea every 3-4 weeks – they're heavy feeders!

Pro tip: All three LOVE cool-to-warm May weather. Plant peas FIRST in early May, beans MID-MAY, artichokes ANYTIME after last frost.

Save this for your May weekend planting! 🧑‍🌾

Top 3 melons for beginners:

· Cantaloupe (most forgiving)
· Honeydew
· Watermelon (sugar baby variety is easiest)

How to plant in May:
🌱 Soil temp: At least 70°F (21°C) – no colder!
🌱 Depth: ½ to 1 inch deep
🌱 Spacing: 3 feet apart (they like room to roam)
🌱 Sun: Full, all day

Fertilizer schedule:
✅ At planting: Compost + balanced fertilizer (5-10-10)
✅ When first flowers appear: Switch to low-nitrogen (5-15-15) – nitrogen = leaves, phosphorus = fruit
✅ Once fruits start forming: Stop fertilizing – just water consistently

Pro tip: Plant on small mounds (helps drainage & heat absorption). Mulch to keep soil moist and prevent rot.
