Tukey reminds us that precision alone isn't enough; it's the synergy between the right question and an approximate answer that truly sparks innovation.

In the name of forward, positive progress, let's prioritize asking the right questions, as they are the catalysts that lead us to profound discoveries and transformative solutions.

Waste isn’t always waste, it can be a resource in the right system.

Researchers are exploring how heat from data centers can be redirected to grow microalgae, which in turn absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis. The result is a closed-loop approach where energy, emissions, and biology work together instead of against each other.

It’s a shift from isolated solutions to integrated systems, designing the way ecosystems function, where outputs become inputs and nothing is wasted.

In the pursuit of progress, we have inadvertently created some complex global challenges. Within this realization lies our greatest strength: the power to resolve what we have set in motion.

We firmly believe biomimicry creates inspiration for moving in the correct direction utilizing nature to inform a more sustainable design for your product, building or more!

A needed reminder that our ecological crisis isn’t just a technical problem, it’s a worldview problem.

For too long, progress has meant bending nature to our will. Biomimicry asks us to flip that script: to see nature not as a resource to extract from, but as a mentor with 3.8 billion years of research and development behind her.

If we want to build a future that lasts, we have to start by listening differently.

Nature is the ultimate origami master.

The single-celled predator Lacrymaria olor extends its neck over 30 times its body length in an instant - and then folds it back just as quickly - thanks to a clever system of cellular pleats and helical scaffolds. Scientists call this “Lacrygami,” a naturally evolved folding strategy that has inspired advances in robotics, drone design, and compact deployable structures.

By studying how living systems fold, store, and release energy with precision, engineers can design more efficient, adaptable, and resilient technologies.

Biomimicry isn’t just about copying nature, it’s about learning how evolution solves complex problems with elegance.

Nature never innovates by accident.

Researchers studying Yellowstone’s tiger beetles uncovered a microscopic groove pattern on the insects’ bodies, an adaptation so effective that it led to a first-of-its-kind patent.

What could this natural design inspire?

Early ideas range from energy-efficient building insulation to improved hip and shoulder replacements - places where controlled fluid distribution matters.

It’s another example of how our wild places are more than protected landscapes; they’re living laboratories. When we study nature’s designs, we open doors to solutions we never knew we needed.

A reminder that innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing, it often means relearning. Biomimicry invites us to shift from taking from nature to learning with her.

Here’s to a year of learning with nature, not just from it.

Every day is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow - just as ecosystems do.

Let this year be one of curiosity, creativity, and thoughtful innovation.

Look to the natural world for inspiration, and let it guide the way we build, design, and live.

Sydney Smith’s words remind us that small actions matter. Waiting for the perfect moment - or for grand solutions - only delays progress. Whether in sustainability, design, or daily life, it’s the accumulation of “little” efforts that creates lasting impact.

Biomimicry Design Alliance

The Biomimicry Design Alliance includes architects, designers, scientists, and innovative technology solutions that are working together to create tools to help make biomimicry more accessible to the architecture community. We translate the site-specific needs of the built environment into biological functions in order to solve the design challenge. And by forming alliances with Denver institutions as Collaborators, we expand the our knowledge base and resources exponentially.

BDA offers consulting services, works on unique research in architectural biomimicry, designs biomimetic projects, as well as educates the public on the possibilities of learning from nature as opposed to controlling it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Biomimicry Design Alliance Associates are a diverse group of people committed to making the built environment complement instead of compete with the planet. Their backgrounds include architecture, biomimicry, ecology, industrial design, sustainability engineering, astrophysics, science education, and illustration.
