There is a reason our clients keep coming back to IPE wood for their outdoor spaces, and it’s not just because of how beautiful it is. 🤎

IPE (pronounced “ee-pay”) is a Brazilian hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot, mold, insects, and moisture with zero chemical treatments needed. It is so dense it literally sinks in water, and with minimal maintenance, it can last 50+ years. While other materials warp, crack, and fade after a few seasons, IPE just keeps going.

Yes, it’s an investment. Courtyards are some of our favorite outdoor spaces to design and build. A well designed courtyard works because it feels effortless, connected to the home, and meant to be lived in.

This custom courtyard features a built in Ipe bench, Lueders limestone patio made with Austin limestone, and Mexican beach pebbles to soften the geometry and add texture underfoot. A teakwood fire pit anchors the space, while butterfly iris and liriope bring movement and greenery. Ground and path lighting keep the courtyard usable after dark, and these beautiful fountains from Restoration Hardware add sound, privacy, and a calm, immersive feel.

A hard freeze is different than a frost, and your plants need a different approach.

During a hard freeze, the goal isn’t to block cold air.

It is to retain the warmth already held in the ground.

Plant covers work by trapping soil heat, not by keeping cold out. Thicker materials provide better insulation and help slow heat loss overnight.

Whatever material you use, it must be secured to the ground. Use stakes, bricks, or rocks to seal in warmth.

If you choose plastic or tarps, remove them once temperatures rise. Left on too long, they can trap moisture and suffocate plants.

A few small steps can make a big difference when temperatures drop.

A pool is a great feature on its own, but the landscape design is what actually turns it into a retreat.

For this Houston yard, we used custom IPE wood and turf inlays to bridge the gap between the home’s modern architecture and the water.
The goal was to extend those clean lines all the way to the pool’s edge, creating a rhythm that guides you through the space. It’s more than just a deck, it’s the difference between having a place to swim and having a place to escape.

One unique design feature can change the entire feel of a landscape. For this design and install in Garden Oaks, we went with these custom-cut stone pillars to give the front yard some additional height and texture.

A permanent rock feature looks just as good in the winter as it does in the summer. Pairing a custom feature like this with native plants is a great way to get a high-end, stand-out look that is low maintenance.

n landscape design, everyone loves the big reveal, the lush plant beds, the stonework, the architectural flow. But the truth is… the magic is in the details you almost miss at first glance.

The clean lines.

The way materials meet seamlessly, stone to gravel, gravel to turf, lighting to hardscape, without gaps, slippage, or future headaches.

These little moments are what make a landscape not only look refined today, but stay beautiful season after season.

When hardscapes fail, it is almost always because the details were ignored. Gravel that drifts everywhere? Usually not enough depth or the wrong base. Edging that shifts? Improper installation or poor compaction. Lighting that looks crooked or gets buried over time? That is a measurement issue long before it’s a maintenance issue.

Durability is designed. This is why we take our time with the parts most people never see, precise cuts on stone, perfectly level borders, the right amount of gravel, the right base layer, intentional spacing, and clean transitions. For this Garden Oaks home, the goal was to bring a Hill Country feel to the landscape and create a low-maintenance design suited to Houston’s variable climate. We reimagined the front yard with a new walkway, a permeable driveway, and pollinator-friendly native Texas plants, accented by the subtle purples and blues found in Hill Country landscapes. But our favorite feature of this project, and the focal point of the design, is the rock garden, which adds texture, structure and color to the front yard. The result is a one of a kind landscape that complements the home’s architecture and feels grounded, balanced and effortless.
