What do the Trotter’s and St. Patrick have in common??
Little Duleek, Ireland!! 🍀
In 1816 Patriarch John Trotter built St. Keenan’s Church right next to the ancient abbey that was established by St. Patrick himself! St. Keenan’s closed in 1973 & sat empty for many years. Now it’s a great restaurant (I had an amazing lunch there 4 years ago, overlooking the ancient graves & left flowers at the grave of some Trotter family members.)
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

Happy 193rd Birthday to 3 time Bloomington mayor and businessman John W. Trotter!! John immigrated from Ireland as a teenager and with his big brother James as a witness, became a Naturalized Citizen in McLean County at the age of 25. John and his little sister Georgina owned and operated a lumber yard on West Market street. John was well known for his hospitality and generosity. He is buried in Bloomington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Raise a glass in honor of His Honor today! 🥂

Happy 202nd Birthday to eldest Trotter son, James! An Irish immigrant, James came to New York with part of his family in the 1840’s. The family began migrating west, and after father John died of cholera in Chicago, settled near Kappa. That area was deemed too wild and unsettled, so the family moved on to Bloomington where they thrived. The Bloomington City Directories list James as a grain dealer and merchant. He was the last survivor of his immediate family, passing away in 1907 at the age of 82. James left money in his will for a statue or fountain to be given to the city in honor of his family. This gift, Trotter Fountain, is from James to us. Have a piece of cake in his honor today! 🎉

A 1912 Christmas greeting to Keziah Trotter from her niece, Blanche Anthenat Stock

Dear Aunt,
Hope this card finds you well and able to enjoy a good big dinner. We are going to Tampico for Christmas and hope to get home to Mama’s [in El Paso] about the first of the year. Wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Blanche

Keziah was a first cousin to the Trotter Fountain Trotters. When she was 8 years old, her family immigrated from County Meath, Ireland and settled in Kappa. Her parents sent her to a girls school in Dixon where she excelled. A nice collection of her books survive. She lived most of her adult life in Bloomington with an uncle. According to family legend, Aunt Kizzie was a lawyer, but no proof has been found - yet. 😉

Happy 149th Birthday to Trotter cousin, Blanche Charlotte Anthenat Stock! This lovely lady grew up in El Paso where she met and married Theodore Stock, a young pharmacist. They moved to Tampico, where they were neighbors to a young Ronald Reagan, and later to Peoria. Blanche died in 1947 and is buried in the El Paso mausoleum.
