Something I think about on every big window: how will you actually reach the shades?

On this one, all six are cordless. The lower ones you can reach easily. For the top middle shade, I gave the customer a pole to operate it.

Motorized is another way to handle high shades, and I’m happy to show you how that works. But a pole is a simple fix that does the job.

If you have a tall window and you’re wondering how you’d ever open the top, ask me before you order. It’s much easier to plan for than to fix later.

The part people ask about: how do you put a shade on a quarter circle?

You can’t use a standard shade. Each one is made to order for its exact shape, which means the measurements have to be right before anything is ordered.

If you’ve got an arched, angled, or odd-shaped window you’ve been ignoring, it can usually be covered. Send me a photo.

Six cordless cellular shades: three on the bottom, three across the top, and the upper left and right corners are quarter circles. Each one is made to fit its own piece of the window.

Replacing sagging vinyl mini blinds that no longer operated. Top priority was light protection from the quarter circles.

I come to you with samples, we look at your actual light and your actual windows, and you tell me what’s bugging you. Then I put together a real quote. No guessing at numbers over the phone.

Most of what I do is in homes, but I install in commercial spaces too.

The shades at Ellsworth Community College are a good example. Same process as a farmhouse window: I measure, I order, and I install everything myself.

If you manage a building, office, or business and your window coverings are tired, I’d be glad to talk it through.

The shades at the college didn’t fail all at once. It was little things first.

Fabric that’s yellowed or faded in streaks. A chain that sticks or snaps. A clutch that won’t hold the shade where you leave it.

If any of that sounds like your windows, it’s usually not a fix-it-yourself situation. Shades don’t last forever, especially on big, sunny windows.

A quick fabric note from the Ellsworth Community College job.

The shades in this classroom are Draper Flex Shades in S-Screen, Granite, at 1% openness. That number is how much of the fabric is open weave. A lower number means a tighter weave, which cuts more glare and sun but gives you a bit less view through the shade than a 3% or 5%.

For big windows where glare is the problem, 1% is often the right call. If you care more about the view, I’d steer you toward a more open weave.

Before and after in a classroom at Ellsworth Community College’s Dale & Marilyn Howard Center.

The original shades from when the building went up were worn out. The fabric had discolored, the chains were broken, and the clutches no longer worked, so they weren’t doing their job anymore.

I replaced them with large solar shades that cut the glare and heat but still let you see outside. We used Drapers Flex shades in S-Screen 1%, Granite

I’ve worked with Ellsworth several times over the years, and it’s always good to be back. Swipe to see the difference.

Top-down/bottom-up shades confuse people until they see them in person — then it just clicks. It's really just flexibility: you decide where the coverage sits based on what that window actually needs, morning to night. Small feature, big difference in how a room feels.
