This is a cool project I worked on this year. As you may or may not know, I am a licensed engineer and design building systems for a living. For this project we completely rebuilt a greenhouse and outdoor garden area at a special education high school. This new greenhouse is completely automated with shade controls, motorized vents, hydronic heating, circulation fans, evaporative coolers, and irrigation. Everything can be controlled from a touch screen. I hope this enhances the educational experience and is therapeutic for these kids with special needs.

First melon I’ve ever grown in this climate. It was so delicious fresh off the vine. The aroma explodes when you cut it open. I’ll definitely grow this yearly if the plants behave. Variety is petit Gris de Rennes.

Finally some red tomatoes in the garden! This variety is Beefy Boy, a hearty tomato with good disease resistance. I’ll slice one of these up for my lunch today 😋

This is my first success at growing in Chicago. I planted these last year, but didn’t get a single female flower develop into a fruit. After awhile, a neighboring cucumber plant took over the whole trellis. This year I rotated the trellis from an east-west to north-south configuration to blast these plants with the maximum sunlight. I put about six plants in a four foot long row. The variety is petit gris de rennes, supposedly a divine French heirloom variety. I must admit, I have no clue when to pick these! Pictured is the largest of around 5-6 fruits on the plants right now.

A new addition to my garden this year, Rudbeckia ‘Prairie Glow’. Compared to the typical Black-eyed Susan, this grows a much taller 3-4 feet and has that brilliant pop of orange around the middle. I put two plants amongst swamp milkweed and echinacea in hopes this will self seed and fill in the gaps on this ‘wild’ side of my garden.

My cactus on the wall is still chugging along. I planted this in the geometric planter with a bonsai mix that is pretty much pure grit. I give it a small drink of water every once in a while. This wall is blasted with sun in the summer and stays cold all winter because it backs up to an unconditioned stairwell. Seems to be pretty happy.

Harvested the this evening. The heads were much smaller than last year, I think either the mild winter or some hot days early in the season made them finish early. I’m not too sad though because these hardneck varieties are packed with flavor compared to what you can normally buy in an American grocery store. I actually planted these close to Christmas because our winter started off so wet and mild.

Not the prettiest plant photo, but gardening isn’t always pretty. We’ve spent the last couple months tearing out deteriorating privet hedges, constructing a new front porch, and replanting the front garden. We add plants here and there hoping to build a lush perennial and annual border over the next few years. Today’s addition is this beautiful concrete urn which will be inset with a small solar powered fountain surrounded by a mix of tall and trailing plants. It is a garden focal point I’ve been dreaming of since I started watching . It is also one of the heaviest objects I have lifted and I am a 6’3” beast 💪🏼. The dirt patch will be filled with flagstone path once we can actually source some local.

This stunning by David Austin burst overnight. It has such a beautiful apricot color and is loaded with petals. The scent is absolutely delicious. I just planted this fine specimen this spring, I can’t wait for it to grow into a big shrub.

Caught a snacking on the milkweed I planted for it. I’ve tried to scatter these plants throughout the garden to help feed the monarch population. From seed, these have taken two to three years to establish themselves even though ‘weed’ is part of the name. They are quite hard to germinate and create a strong enough plant that makes it thru its first year.
