Today is a good day to publicly restate our stance on being a refuge from non-plant politics. Don, the owner, has no shortage of opinions and data and will air them to whoever is curious, but the business proper does not celebrate or advance any politician, political party, holiday, or remembrance.

We don’t do this out of a belief that politics are capable of being avoided. There’s a reason we repurpose old pots, don’t use vermiculite or perlite, explicitly select UPS and USPS as carriers whenever possible, buy vehicles from domestically headquartered auto companies, bought an EV, and donate to a variety of nonprofits.

Ironically, or paradoxically, our position of silence is a social commentary. Not every service member wants a reminder or a thank you. Don lost his mother to breast cancer when he was 26 and hates the bumper stickers and marketing around breast cancer. Frankly, sometimes people just want to forget and tend to a plant.

So, as a reminder for our sales: we request that you refrain from non-plant political dialogue at our sales and leave your candidate/party t-shirts at home. Don will embarrass you if you can’t abide.

Happy Planting!

Venue/Nonprofit Request!

We’d like to have a pay-what-you-want/no price plant sale and giveaway the weekend of November 7th in the Northern Neck.

We’d like to team up with a nonprofit or community group and have the event include a donation drive (Food? Baby supplies? Prepaid Gas Cards?) as well as a plastic pot recycling.

Our only request is that the location be in the lower northern neck (Callao, Lively, Lancaster, Kilmarnock, Reedville, etc).

Also note: We don’t need suggestions of someone we should reach out to. We’re looking for that person to make themselves known to us and interested!

Business Update: First Look Northern Virginia Native Plant Co! This is our division that will offer native plant deliveries to KG-FXBG-Alexandria-Fairfax-Arlington during peak Spring and Fall planting seasons.

We're currently working on the Square site and finalizing inventory, but we hope this will help expand the options an accessibility of native plants for the region while *finally* creating a more streamlined and tech-forward ordering system.

Expect this to go live January 2027, but those wanting a sneak peek at items we plan to offer, pricing, or want to offer their input, please email [email protected].

Dont Forget!

One Week Left for Pre-Orders for the Fall Native Plant Sale Fundraiser!

Thought it would be a good time to drop a useful guide for plants in those Sandy, Dry to Average conditions.

Back at our Tappahannock Takeover we pulled weeds and added more diverse plantings to help bolster bare spots.

New additions include: Bush Clover, Little Blue Stem, Foxglove Beardtongue, Moss Phlox, and Spartina patens.

We also increased the Eastern Joe Pye in the Sweetbay Magnolia Tri-Oval and added Wild Strawberry. Front planters had more Blue Mist Flower added to wet areas.

A Red Chokeberry was added to the shrub hedge.

TL:DR - tides are higher than we thought. The tidal grasses we planted are thriving and we will be adding more!

Decided to venture back to the end of Virginia St in Urbanna at high tide to see what our ecosystem looks like.

Well, this would explain why most of our plants didn’t make it!

We dropped another 42 spartina Alterniflora plugs to help fill in the area and are excited to have a better sense of this area as a low marsh!

How We Are Helping Growers This Fall

We’re very fortunate to have budget set aside this fall to purchase plants from growers (or retailers) who are sitting on excess inventory.

How it works: if you’re a plant store or grower and you undersold or over planted a native, straight species crop, we want to hear from you! We’d like to purchase your inventory to give away or pot up in our inventory.

Why this is important: growers and sellers are low-margin enterprises. Sometimes they run out of room to up-pot unsold inventory or they simply have to compost it. In either case, it strains their business. There’s also lots of folks who need/want plants but maybe can’t afford them. This is our market oriented solution to the problem.

How you can help: buying our plants helps us provide this service! You can also donate (not tax deductible) to this effort if you’d like to.
