Beat the summer heat from the top down! ☀️⬇️ Proper attic insulation is one of the simplest ways to keep your home cooler and your energy bills lower all season long.
Why it matters in summer:
- Keeps rooms cooler: Slows the flow of attic heat (often 120–150°F) into your living spaces, especially upstairs.
- Cuts AC costs: Your system runs less and cycles more efficiently, saving money and reducing wear and tear.
- More even temperatures: Fewer hot spots and stuffy rooms.
- Better sealing = better comfort: When paired with air sealing, it helps keep hot air, dust, and pollen out and cool air in.
- Boosts duct performance: Insulated attics reduce heat gain around ductwork, so you get colder air at the vents.
- Helps manage humidity: Less warm, moist air sneaking in means fewer condensation risks on cool ceilings.
- Quieter home: Insulation also dampens outside noise.
- Greener footprint: Lower energy use = fewer emissions.
Quick check:
- If you can see attic joists, you probably need more insulation.
- DOE recommends about R-38 to R-60 for most U.S. attics (roughly 10–14 inches for many materials).
- Seal gaps first, add insulation, ensure good ventilation; in hot climates, consider a radiant barrier.
