IT WAS FIFTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK.
And, Jaws is as terrifying today as it was then.
I still remember the summer of 1975.
A relatively unknown director named Steven Spielberg made a film about a very big fish.
I was eleven and went to see it with my parents.
Ruined my summer and several to follow.
That giant great white shark became my boogeyman.
We lived in Illinois at the time and after seeing that movie I refused to swim in Lake Michigan.
Yes, a freshwater lake with no sharks.
Heck, I even avoided swimming pools.
Such is a child’s wild imagination — thinking a shark could chomp me any time and anywhere.
I did still take baths in a tub.
Jaws remains one of the all-time great movies and I still get chills thinking about the ending with Roy Scheider playing Chief Brody on a sinking ship.
He was running out of ammo as the shark — chewing on a scuba tank — came right for him.
And then that fateful line: “Smile you son of a bitch.”
Kaboom … a round hits the tank exploding and killing that darn shark.
I remember standing up in the theater and cheering.
I STILL CHEER FOR THAT GREAT MOVIE TODAY.
