This was my Holiday obsession. Work began mid November and was completed soon after the first of the year. There was a lot of Hoover input. Doug Miller referred me. Carol Cunningham Baty performed demolition. Brian Bergstrom assisted in milling various components. I even brought in Pat Kelehan to finish drywall. Everybody came together to produce this fantastic update. Thanks for the help everyone!

My customer decided it was time to extract their house from the 80's and bring it up to date. Out went the bulky oak balusters replaced by sleek iron balusters that tie in with their decor. Shiplap on three walls adds a contemporary accent.

This was a fun project. We built a beadboard wainscot with a shelf cap to create a country feel. Then mounted this farmhouse style wash basin. These old time faucets top off the sink to complete the transformation.

Today I replaced a faltering ceiling fan with this seldom used fan. Since they were both bright brass the existing light kit was transferred to the repurposed unit.

Tip from your Handyman #1

Most of us take our hot water heater for granted. As long as it's delivering hot water we are happy. But there are a couple of tasks that need to be performed to ensure a long life for your heater. The first is simple and should be done every 6 months, every 3 months if you live in West Des Moines or Waukee. On the bottom of your tank is a faucet. Simply open the valve all the way and drain several gallons of water out of the tank. What you are doing is removing sediment that has settled on the bottom. In order to direct the outflow directly into the drain I have attached on old clothes washer hose to my heater. A word of caution though; if you have never performed this task and your heater is more than a few years old the possibility exists that you could clog the drain valve. You might need to open and close the valve a few times to work your way through the obstruction.

The 2nd task is replacement of the anode. What the heck is that you might ask. This is an Aluminum or Magnesium rod that extends through the length of the tank. It attracts minerals in the water which cling to the sacrificial rod. Once that rod has been eaten away the minerals will start deteriorating the walls of the heater instead. The anode should be replaced every 3-5 years depending on your water hardness. The cost of replacing an anode is $250-$300.

You can easily double the life of your water heater by performing these 2 maintenance tasks. That sounds like time and money well spent. The biggest benefit is knowing that your next shower will be a hot one.

I don't always know what I will be doing from one day to the next. One Friday morning I received a call from Room and Board in Minneapolis. Their delivery crew was supposed to assemble this beautiful Cumalo umbrella earlier in the week and gave up. The homeowner was having a big shindig the next day and needed it assembled. When I finished my previously scheduled job I headed over and got to work. After reassembling a few things we got it put together and working perfectly. Everybody was happy and the party was a success

I want to show off this screened porch upgrade that was completed this summer. The original door, screen panels and framing were deteriorating after many years of service. Cedar 4×4 posts and 2×4 top and bottom plates were rabbeted to accept aluminum screen panels, new door and re-installation of an art-glass panel. Everything was prepainted before installation, then recoated upon completion. The design in the screen panels was replicated to preserve the original look. The finished product is more durable than before and has an enhanced substantial appearance.
