What if a future Florida specialty crop is already dropping fruit in our yards? 🌴🥜

Tropical almonds (Terminalia catappa) produce kernels with nearly identical protein levels to California almonds (33.00% versus 32.89%) along with MORE fiber and several key minerals.

Meanwhile, California supplies about 80% of the world’s almonds, yet the industry faces continued scrutiny over irrigation and large-scale pollination demands.

Recent research identifies tropical almond as a promising commercial nut crop, especially if we select trees with larger kernels and develop efficient harvesting and shelling systems.

Could this abundant tropical tree become a locally grown source of roasted nuts, plant protein and culinary oil?

YES.

It may be time to stop treating the fruit as yard waste and start investing in its future as a crop.

Katuk patents?! Who’s in?!

Katuk contains papaverine, a powerful smooth-muscle relaxant and vasodilator. Papaverine comes from the broader opium-alkaloid family, but it is non-narcotic and does not act like a habit-forming opioid painkiller.

That distinction is fascinating during an opioid epidemic!!

Opioids can cause peripheral vasodilation, but their addictive qualities are a problem.

Vasodilation and smooth-muscle relaxation have enormous medical relevance, such as for cardiovascular and pulmonary vascular conditions.

Researchers reviewing katuk’s pharmacology have specifically called for patents to work toward standardized pharmaceutical preparations with appropriate therapeutic doses.

Could we select cultivars with consistent alkaloid profiles? YES

Develop safe extraction and processing methods? YES

Patent new formulations, uses, or high-performing cultivars? YES

Could existing harvesting equipment be adapted for large-scale production? YES

This is where permaculture meets plant science, public health, and entrepreneurship. Let’s talk about it! We will need partnerships that last decades. 🤩🙏🏼🌈

The hummingbirds are coming, and they’re HUNGRY!

Ruby-throated hummingbirds usually migrate through Florida in fall, from September into November. To make them happy, it helps to have nectar plants blooming everywhere!

Brazilian red cloak is a hummingbird favorite in South Florida. Its bright red bracts catch the birds’ attention, and its small white tubular flowers offer nectar.

Hummingbirds have speedy metabolisms and feed often, visiting lots of flowers throughout the day. Planting a variety of nectar sources like this one that bloom steadily helps keep food available for our tiny visitors.

I have a calamondin fruit to share. Come taste some!

Love citrus but find it challenging to grow?

Hurricanes helped spread canker bacteria across Florida in 2004–05.

Citrus greening, although often referred to as a “virus”, is actually a bacterial disease.

Calamondin isn’t immune, but I never treat my trees and YET they are so productive. I never see blemishes on the fruit the way I do with other citrus. I have it planted under my oaks for added protection (predator insects!)

The tart, little fruits can be used like lemons or limes in drinks and recipes.

Okay, plant friends, I have chaya cuttings to share with you!!! I have four distinct types growing here at Pike Food Forest: Chayamansa, Redonda, Estrella, and Picuda. My Redonda has two leaf forms: Maple Leaf and Jumbo Leaf. All are delicious!!🤤

Chaya is a beautiful, productive leafy green. It’s often grown as an ornamental, because the flowers bring butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.

Nutritionally, chaya is a powerhouse. Just remember to boil the leaves uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes in a well ventilated space.

I have lá lốt for you! Also known as wild betel leaf, it loves shade and moist soil, and its leaves add a smoky, peppery flavor to wraps and curries. It makes a lovely groundcover, just give it room. I loves to spread.
