Meet Our Owner & Principal Designer, the Boss Lady Behind It All — Kelly Lankford, ASID, LEED AP, NCIDQ Certified 🌟

As a Heartland Design Award winner, Kelly brings more than 25 years of experience, passion, and expertise to every project. Her talent for creating timeless, functional interiors has taken her from her Midwestern roots to projects across the country, building a diverse portfolio that spans a wide range of styles, spaces, and design aesthetics.

Kelly is a licensed interior designer in Missouri, NCIDQ Certified, LEED AP accredited, and a proud member of ASID, reflecting her commitment to excellence and the highest standards in the design industry.

While KHL Design Studio has completed projects from coast to coast, Kansas City will always be home. Our studio is proudly located in the heart of Downtown Lee's Summit, Missouri, where we help clients create beautiful, personalized spaces throughout the Kansas City metro and beyond.

In 2019, Kelly expanded her vision by opening INSPO, a modern home décor boutique filled with carefully curated furniture, lighting, accessories, and artwork from talented local artists. INSPO, short for inspiration, is a destination for unique finds that help bring every design vision to life.

This basement was transformed into a bright, relaxing coastal retreat in the heart of the Midwest. Soft shades of blue, warm sandy neutrals, and layered textures create a space that feels peaceful, inviting, and inspired by the beauty of the shoreline. 🌊

From the very beginning, KHL helped establish the foundation of the design by selecting the paint and carpet. We then curated the furnishings, lighting, artwork, and accessories to bring the client's coastal vision to life.

The dining table was the only existing piece incorporated into the design, serving as the perfect starting point for a cohesive space that feels both timeless and uniquely theirs.

A big win for Interior Design in Missouri!

After years of advocacy by interior designers across the state, Missouri SB 1233 was signed into law last month, marking an important step forward for our profession.

I’m pictured with my friend and colleague Susan Stevenson, Professor of Interior Design at UCM, who was among the local designers who spent years advancing this legislation. Susan is holding a copy of SB 1233, and I’m proudly holding my Missouri Certified Interior Designer license.

Professional interior design goes far beyond creating beautiful spaces. Qualified designers bring expertise in space planning, building codes, accessibility, construction, lighting, materials, and how people interact with the built environment.

One of the most significant aspects of SB 1233 is that it creates a pathway for qualified interior designers to independently sign and seal technical documents within the defined scope of interior design, recognizing the education, experience, examination, and responsibility our profession requires.

We’re especially grateful to Susan and the many Missouri designers whose years of advocacy helped make this possible.
