Project Spotlight: The Knickerbocker Hotel

The original hostelry was designed in 1901 and opened in 1906, but shuttered in 1920 following a decrease in business. It was the home of Newsweek magazine from 1940 to 1959 and branded "The Newsweek Building" during that time. The Knickerbocker was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and was designated a New York City Landmark in 1988.

We were part of the building's conversion back to a hotel from 2013 to 2015, when it also assumed its original name. The historic restoration included installation of decorative granite and limestone at 1st and 2nd floors; replication and installation of all granite at building base; restoration of limestone at water table; layout and install new structural concrete curbs.

We worked with Peter F. P**n Architects to restore this beautiful structure.

Project Spotlight

In the spring of 2017, we began work on replacing the cornice on the Bergen County Justice Center’s main building. It was an emergency repair and renovation project, as portions of the cornice were cracking and falling from the building. The building was originally constructed in the early 1900’s and as such, is listed in the NJ and National Register of Historic Places. The work involved selective demolition, dismantling of cornice stones, preparation and waterproofing of the surface for reapplication, setting new cornice stones and new masonry above the cornice and establishing all roof connections. The project was coordinated through Raymond Dressler, Phil Arfuso, Gerald Reiner Jr. and Frank Covello at the Justice Center and the Engineering firm, Alaimo Group, with support from Richard Koelle.

Project Spotlight

It was a pleasure to work on this project with our friends at the Proprietary House Association and CTS Group. The Proprietary House was built in 1762 and can be found on both the NJ and National Register of Historic Places. Paragon Restoration was hired to perform extensive exterior and interior restoration. Some elements of the external transformation were brick and stone replacement at the parapet, resetting of stone lintels, cleaning, patching, and re-pointing of masonry. We also applied a mineral coating on brick, replaced the wood soffit, headers, and cornice, replaced slate shingles, relined and re-sloped gutters, removed and reinstalled copings and railings on the entrance ramp, and replaced brick pavers, stairs, and railings. The interior restoration included repair of transom and sidelights and priming and painting of wood elements throughout.
