2024 was an incredible year, as we were blessed with two healthy granddaughters. Our son Kyle and his wife Sarah gave us Brigid Maeve, born March 22nd and our daughter Amber and her husband Mike gave us Norah Leigh, born August 13th. So what was a carving granddad to do but make them each a quarter board with their names and favorite children's books carved into the ends. Here are some images of the final results. In the middle of last year I was asked if I could carve a figurehead. This request came from an existing client who previously had me carve a shell motif for the front door on their new home in Rye, NH. Long story short... this 24" high figurehead project was totally out of my comfort zone. After many starts and stops and some frustration, it was finally delivered this spring. Staying in the era of whaling in the U.S., during its 200 year existence, the whaleboat became the workhouse of the industry.
Some 60-80K were built. Each whaleship carried 5-7 boats per voyage. Upon their return to port usually half that number were ordered to be built in prep for the next excursion. I have made seven of these for clients. Since this model can be rendered in a wide variety of configurations, no two are alike.

Two years ago my daughter Mandy and her husband Bill purchased some land on the Red River at Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Where they proceeded to build 8 Scandinavian/modern rental cabins in the middle of a wild flower field by the river. They are now ready to accept bookings and excited to introduce Three Suns Cabins at Red River Gorge. This area of Kentucky offers boundless outdoor adventure from rock climbing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. Bookings are provided at: booking.rrggetaways.com I wanted to showcase these beautiful cabins and their setting as I played a small part in creating some of the details. Among these images you will notice the barrel stave cabin signs, a wooden coffee table (4 were provided)and the exterior sign, 3 Suns Cabin.

Here are some progress images from "In The Shipyard". I've been working on a model of the USS Syren, a 240-ton, 18 gun brig, built for the US Navy in 1803. A short history had her doing missions in the Mediterranean from 1804-1806. She was later laid up at the Washington Navy Yard until reactivation in 1807. During her service in the war of 1812, she was captured by the 74-gun HMS Medway after an 11 hour chase.
The reason I choose this model was for the large amount of detail. the final rendition will be a beautiful show piece.

It has been a while but Dandyfunk Arts is returning to Facebook and Instagram. I will be posting new product announcements, show dates, and the progress of ship model builds (the 1600s--1900s era) which I'll refer to as "In The Ship Yard". All the ship models will be for sale or you can commission a custom build. Also, I offer restoration services for ship models that need some TLC. Call or email me with any questions on pricing or the services I offer.
