STANTON, Tennessee, March 24 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) plans to build up to 500,000 electric trucks a year at its BlueOval City complex under construction in western Tennessee, the automaker said on Friday.

BlueOval City will assemble several versions of Ford’s next-generation F-series electric pickup, which the company calls Project T3.

In an event Friday at the plant, Ford CEO Jim Farley said production will begin "in roughly 30 months" -- the fall of 2025.

The Stanton plant northeast of Memphis is part of Ford’s plan to have global EV production capacity of 2 million vehicles a year in place by the end of 2026.

A video shown at the event described the new electric pickup as "the sequel to the F150 Lightning" that is currently built near Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, and is based on the standard combustion-engine F-series pickups.

Joseph Armstrong has a criminal record, but he can vote. A former longtime Tennessee state legislator, he can receive his public pension. What he may not be able to do, a federal agency is saying, is run the radio station he's owned for more than a decade.

A cornerstone of the local Black community, WJBE, 1040AM, is Knoxville's only Black-owned radio station. The station's call sign pays homage to the original station, also bearing the same name, that was once owned by "The Godfather of Soul," James Brown.

The station's rich history is actually entwined with Armstrong's own. He worked there as a salesman in the 1970s to pay his way through college at the University of Tennessee. After Brown sold WJBE in 1979, it went through multiple owners and call letters and eventually went off air in the late 1980s, leaving Knoxville without a Black-owned and -focused station. That is, until Armstrong came in.

In 2012, Armstrong, who is Black, took "virtually all" his life savings to buy a local radio station and resurrect the WJBE name.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A group of advocates for child s*x abuse victims held a demonstration in front of the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Sunday morning.

The group demanded the resignation of Bishop Richard Stika following a 2022 lawsuit alleging he was involved in the cover-up of a r**e. The first hearing for the case was earlier this month.

Susan Vance works with the group Survivor’s Network of Those Abused By Priests, or SNAP, and said abuse in churches is a common issue.

“We as representatives of survivors of clergy abuse want to know why he is not gone, and it is very important to survivors that their stories be understood and their stories be told,” Vance said.

The lawsuit, filed by a church musician, alleges defamation and negligence by Stika after the musician accused a seminarian at the church of r**e. The musician is suing Stika and the Knoxville Diocese, not the seminarian.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Spring is well underway, and that means moving season is, too.

Many factors are considered before choosing where to live, and the cost of utilities is high on the list.

Move.org has conducted research that ranks each state on average from having the least expensive to the most expensive utility bills including electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, trash, internet, phone, and streaming services.

Tennessee comes in at No. 16 as one of the most expensive with monthly utility costs of about $406.52, according to the report.

Trains and Tennessee go together like biscuits and jam. The Volunteer State’s history with railways dates back to 1845 when the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad became the state’s first railroad. During those days, trains were used for just about everything—from the transport of goods to the transport of people. Today, we don’t depend on railways quite as much as we once did, but our nostalgia for the familiar blow of the whistle or plume of steam dissipating into the sky has only grown stronger with each passing year.

If you catch yourself daydreaming about watching the beautiful countryside blur by while you’ve got your head pressed against the window and not a worry in the world, then it may be time for a Tennessee train trip. So whether you want to take an hour-long scenic ride to clear your head, or if you’ve always dreamt about an interactive murder mystery train, Tennessee has got you covered. All that’s left to do is hop aboard because the train’s leaving the station!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — One of the two East Tennessee adventure parks nominated for USA Today’s Best Aerial Adventure Park lists made the top 10 list.

On June 9, Navitat Knoxville was announced as No. 10 on the list, ranking among locations in Florida, Missouri and California. At Navitat, there are more than 60 adventure elements, and visitors are able to zipline through the trees, cross wobbly bridges, balance, climb and swing.

Ben Ream, general manager of Navitat, said the win is recognition for the park and for the City of Knoxville.

Environmental groups in Tennessee have an urgent call to action for the Tennessee Valley Authority to cut fossil-fuel emissions and replace their coal plants with renewable energy.

The TVA provides electricity for 153 local power companies and serves 10 million people in Tennessee and parts of six surrounding states.

Gabriella Sarri-Tobar, energy justice campaigner for the Center for Biological Diversity, which is a member of the Clean Up TVA Coalition, wants to see the Kingston and Cumberland power plants replaced with renewable energy alternatives.

She explained local environmental groups including The Clean Up TVA Coalition are working daily to encourage fossil-fuel-free energy production by 2030.

Most of Tennessee runs on nuclear power, providing 43% of the state's electricity in 2021. Only 3% of Tennessee's electricity came from solar panels, and the state barely offers any incentives for its residents to go solar.

But Tennesseeans are getting solar panels anyway. There are roughly 77,880 residential solar installations in the state, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

One big reason solar looks appealing? High power bills. The Volunteer State has the 16th highest electricity rates in the US (12.11 cents per kilowatt-hour), according to SaveOnEnergy, CNET's sister publication. This leads to an average monthly electricity bill of $143.26.

There are numerous power and traffic light outages in Cordova and Germantown due to Sunday night’s severe thunderstorm.

Numerous powerlines have fallen throughout the area, and MLGW is working quickly to restore power.

The outages also affected business owners in the area. Cory Nix, owner of Cordova Automotive, was unable to work and lost money. “Unfortunately, a lot of our technology deals with the internet, and we are kind of at a standstill because we are not able to properly diagnose vehicles anymore.”

It was a similar story at the Dunkin Donuts, where manager Monica Cooper she sat in her car watching MLGW Crews fix what the storm destroyed. “That’s a big help because I know they are trying to do everything that they can to cut all the power back on. It is a big relief to see that.”

The biggest faux controversy of this season's NCAA super regionals resides 28 miles from Pete Taylor Park. And it has nothing to do with college baseball.

It's the chain restaurant Applebee's, which boasts more than 1,500 locations nationwide but none in Hattiesburg, where Southern Miss began a best-of-three games series against Tennessee on Saturday.

The restaurant's omission in Hattiesburg was fuel for an online sparring match between USM and UT fans, sparking comments from the city of Hattiesburg and even restauranteur Robert St. John, who encouraged fans arriving in town for the super regional to scarf down the city's many local cuisine options in Applebee's absence. And if none of those options suit the taste buds, well, the drive to Laurel is short.

I took St. John's advice on the latter to see what all the fuss was about.

I went to the closest Applebee's to Hattiesburg to understand why Tennessee weaponized it ahead of its super regional series against Southern Miss.
