Winter Storm & Potential Prolonged Outages Notice
The National Weather Service has indicated there is an approaching severe winter storm that is expected to impact Alcoa and Blount County this weekend. The Alcoa Electric Department is closely monitoring conditions, and staff is preparing for potential hazardous travel and power outages. Alcoa Electric encourages customers to stay aware of the forecasted weather and the potential impacts that may occur. Below are some helpful tips to assist in preparation for potential prolonged power outages:
Preparation:
-Have flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, and additional warm clothes readily available
-Make sure to charge phones and any necessary medical devices ahead of the storm
-Prepare an emergency kit with food, water, and any essential medications
-Top off the fuel in your vehicles as an alternate place to seek warmth
-If the primary heat source for your home is electric, stock an alternative heat source
-Protect exposed water pipes and drip faucets overnight as temperatures drop well below freezing
-Stay aware and informed: periodically monitor weather updates and stay in contact with family and friends
If You Experience an Outage:
-Please report your outage as soon as possible: 865-380-4890 or https://outageportal.cityofalcoa-tn.gov/Outages
-Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately to Alcoa Electric and 911. Always assume power lines are still energized
-If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside and report it immediately to 911and Alcoa Electric
-Never operate generators, gas grills, or propane heaters indoors or in closed garages
-Never plug a portable generator into a wall outlet. This can backfeed electricity onto the power grid and is an extreme safety hazard for our linemen and engineers
-When using a fireplace or wood stove, make sure it is properly installed and well-ventilated
-Do not use ovens or stovetops as a heating source
-Open flames should never be left unattended
-Know where your water main shut-off valve is in case a water pipe bursts
-Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
-Periodically check in with family and friends
-Periodically monitor outage status on Alcoa Electric’s outage portal (https://outageportal.cityofalcoa-tn.gov/Outages)
Your safety and the safety of our staff is more important than convenience. Taking proper steps now to prepare can prevent injuries, fires, and potential carbon monoxide poisoning during the impacts of this winter storm.
