Did you hear? The USDA has updated its Plant Hardiness Zone Map for the first time in more than 10 years. And its new map could change which flowers, fruits, and vegetables you grow. The 2023 map shows that half of the country has shifted to warmer zones over the last decade, which means many gardeners may be able to grow plants that would not previously survive in their part of the country. Read more about the new map (and how to download a copy for yourself!) at https://seedsavers.org/usda-releases-new-plant-hardiness-zone-map/.

Peppers anyone?
These mild jalapeños are perfect for poppers or chopped in whatever recipe you have. My mil cut-stuffed-wrapped as poppers last year and froze them— they were perfect all winter (great as a chili appe-teaser).
There’s gotta be at least 3 dozen in this basket. Asking 3O cents a piece- cheaper than Walmart.😁

Today I did a remix of last week’s bouquet- I definitely like it better. Took out the coneflowers and Malabar, added goldenrod and that spiky magenta celosia and replaced the coleus with a different variety.
Kept the sunny yellow marigolds, white statice, yellow celosia, strawflowers, and a few gomphrenas.
While I was out cutting I noticed this one lone lisianthus with sweet purple picotee edges and I couldn’t let her go unnoticed. Added some sprigs of salvia, celosia, goldenrod and nepeta. A sweet little Wildcats arrangement.

I think I need more perennial season-long thrillers like daisies and coneflowers. I have quite a few dahlias but the dang grasshoppers chew on them 😡 and l’m trying to be less chemical-dependent.
Perennials- leucanthemum (daisy), echinacea (coneflower), tall phlox, cornus (dogwood)
Annuals- celosia, gomphrena, statice, coleus, ipomoea (sweet potato vine)

It’s HOT this week! Hey gardeners, plant lovers, and flower children! It’s a hot week here in southeast Kansas, zone 6A. When you add to the triple digit heat in the forecast that we are far behind our average rainfall and none coming in the near future, it means supplemental watering is in order to keep your outdoor plants alive and happy.
Double up on water for your annual bedding plants and containers and don’t forget to give your established perennials and trees a drink if you can. You’d be shocked at the number of good plants that died in last year‘s heat wave.
Slow, steady soaking is best but if that’s not possible, anything you can do is better than nothing at all.
We’ll get through this together!

It’s taken me a while to become a fan of hardy hibiscus (rose mallow) but I appreciate them more and more! They are a workhorse in the garden, becoming full 3x3 shrubs by July after completely dying back every winter; and producing dozens of dinner plate sized blooms every few days.
