For those of you who haven’t seen or heard, YES, it is TRUE that Greengate Garden Center is closing - the sweet owner is retiring after serving our plant community for decades!

This is also a good time for me to formally announce that my husband, Ron Richard, and I have partnered with Chad Everage to open a NEW nursery, landscaping/gardening supply house and gardening education company in Lake Charles!

We will do full service landscaping and outdoor design, ponds, lighting, the works, but also provide expert advice and products to the DIYers, offering things that have never been available in our area. I will expand Sprout Savvy Garden Coaching and create a teaching vegetable and pollinator garden on site to be used in my classes which will eventually be moved on site!
Our place will not just be where you stop on your way somewhere else - it will be your destination! 🪴
We’ll even offer feed for chickens, goats, rabbits and other pets! And of course I MUST have chickens on site! 🐓 🐐 🐇

We are making progress working on the property and creating our combined social media accounts to keep everyone updated!

For now, stay tuned to Chadscape Horticultural Services LLC and this page until we merge!

Coming soon to 5507 Big Lake Road! We’re so excited! See y'all soon, Lori Gutierrez Richard

I love to eat artichoke but I rarely harvest them from my plants. These pictures are the only reason I’ve grown them the last six years - the most exquisite bloom rich in nectar that pollinators love. If you don’t harvest them, they mature, flower and make seed. The first one of the season bloomed this morning!

It’s all so beautiful, it’s hard to choose what photos to share. I have hundreds. Each time I take a walk, I see something new.

It’s always mid-May in Southwest Louisiana when everything I teach and share makes sense to others and is worth the effort, the fruits of our labor. It’s pure joy to simply walk through the garden this week and not touch a thing.

Spent part of Mother's Day at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas, which is about 30 minutes from my home. It is a GORGEOUS place with the highlight today being an Amorphophallus Titanum in near bloom! An hour after we left, she started to open! The facility has a live stream of this rare event if you'd like to check it out! I'll put the link in the comment section!

THIS is a proper sunflower, one that will act as a trap crop to protect my growing tomatoes from stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs. They prefer sunflowers. I did not plant this here. It “volunteered” itself. Sometime over the last six months I must have dropped a seed, or re-used soil that a seed was in OR a bird dropped it for me after last summer’s harvest. It doesn’t matter how it got there, here it is in all its 11-foot glory (so far) in APRIL, which is unheard of this early here for a sunflower to be so large. I can’t wait to see its bloom! 🌻

Cleaning gourds on this much-needed rainy day in Southwest Louisiana! This small African Drum gourd took 5 minutes - using only water. No paint, no stain, no gloss. 100% natural.

Not sure what I’ll do with it yet - the possibilities are endless! Before and after:
