Clarkesville’s Graveled Roundabout: A $5 Million Spin on Traffic Safety

The Georgia Department of Transportation has officially awarded a $5 million contract to construct a new roundabout at the busy intersection of GA 197 South and GA 385/17.

But this isn’t your typical roundabout—this one will be surfaced entirely with gravel, a move GDOT claims will “slow down speed demons and keep fender benders at bay.”

Locals, however, are less than thrilled.
“I don’t know why we need a gravel NASCAR track in the front of Ingles,” grumbled longtime resident Eddie Johnston. “And now I gotta drive past where Stoneys used to be and cry into my takeout from somewhere else.”

The project, which required the demolition of the beloved Stoneys restaurant, has faced backlash from residents who miss the iconic diner as well as those who fear the gravel plan could backfire.

“If they think tires squealing on rocks is safer than on pavement,” said local mechanic Ronnie Cole, “I’ve got some prime beachfront property on Lake Russell to sell them.”

GDOT representatives remain resolute in their plan. “We understand the controversy,” said spokesperson Tim Harper, “but this innovative approach will reduce speeding and enhance safety. Plus, no one can do donuts in gravel without looking ridiculous.”

Despite delays and complaints, the gravel roundabout is expected to be complete by 2032.

Until then, drivers are encouraged to enjoy the current four-way stop and maybe a moment of silence for Stoneys.

One thing is certain: Clarkesville’s traffic is about to take a turn for the rocky.
