The most precious scullery!

If you love to cook and entertain, a scullery is a game-changer.

Picture this: friends gathered around the island, a beautiful charcuterie board on display, lively conversation, and not a dirty dish in sight. Behind the scenes, you have a dedicated space to prep food, rinse dishes, hide the last-minute mess, and enjoy the luxury of a SECOND dishwasher. Even better, your coffee maker, KitchenAid mixer, and everyday appliances stay neatly tucked away in their own permanent home—no clearing counters or moving things around before guests arrive.

Finding the perfect location for this scullery took some creative planning, but it was absolutely worth it. We reimagined part of the existing laundry room and created a beautiful arched opening into the kitchen. And don't worry—we carefully redesigned the surrounding spaces to ensure the homeowners still have a generous, highly functional laundry room.

One of the biggest misconceptions about remodeling is that you need to add square footage to make a dramatic impact. In this whole-home remodel, we didn't add a single square foot. Through thoughtful design and expert space planning, we completely transformed how this home functions and feels.

When you see the before photos compared to these finished spaces, you won't believe it's the same house.

The kitchen that went viral!!! ✨

What an incredible labor of love this project became — and the end result is this absolutely spectacular kitchen. Be sure to click through to the before photos, because you truly won’t believe this is the same house!

This sweet family (Ryan Stoll & Sofia Hanke Stoll) chose this home because of its proximity to loved ones, but the interior was nothing like what they envisioned for their family. Their request was:
“Tell us what can be done to make this the kind of home we’re dreaming of.”

That is my favorite question in the world.

It takes creativity, space planning, and a lot of ingenuity, but we completely reworked the entire main floor — and now it’s truly something special.

I’m starting with the kitchen, but we’ll make our way through the whole home together. The biggest request was to add character, and my personal philosophy is always to highlight the views in a home. I immediately envisioned a full wall of windows above the sink, and because the views were so beautiful, I wanted to carry that light into the corner with an additional window there too. To balance the corner window, we designed a glass cabinet on the opposite side of the range to mimic the look and create symmetry.

The coffered ceiling really sets the kitchen apart, but I’m guessing the 5-foot sink may have caught your eye too. For a cook who loves to host, this feature is incredible. The Galley sink accommodates all kinds of cooking and hosting accessories — built-in colanders, cutting boards, drying racks, serving boards, and utensil caddies. And, BlueStar's brand new release of their 48" induction range arrived just in time.

The carefully thought-out function of this kitchen is truly the heart of the space, but honestly… you walk in and it takes your breath away. From the subtle curved detail on the hood to the incredible applied molding on the drawers, every detail matters. And natural marble has simply never led me wrong.

The modern colonial aesthetic feels so elevated while still being inviting and warm. I could not love this kitchen more!

Here’s your teaser for the next post:
We removed all of the cabinetry along the interior wall so we could create a large scullery and recess the built-in refrigerator. The best part of that decision? The room can now accommodate this massive island — and it completely transformed the way the space functions.

Remodels will forever have my heart, because seeing what these homes become is deeply meaningful.

Next up… the scullery!

Before the doors opened at Home at Last’s new space inside West Ridge Mall, a question drove every decision: “What if designing your home didn’t feel overwhelming, but inspiring and fun?”

Here’s what caught our eye at market! Warm, layered interiors, sculptural statement furniture, and a collected mix of old and new defined this year’s High Point Market.

Leaving feeling inspired!

Gah… I don’t even know where to start with this one! The transformation is unbelievable!

The original layout had a pantry right in the middle of the home, completely cutting off the flow between the family room and an undersized kitchen. It made the entire main level feel disconnected for Maris Ross.

As we worked through the new floor plan, simply removing the pantry wasn’t an easy option because of the second story above. But when you’re already this deep… why not go all in? We took on the challenge, removed the second staircase as well, and completely reimagined how this home functions.

And wow… was it worth it.

Now, the heart of the home is exactly where it should be. A stunning kitchen with a 10’ island anchors the space, paired with a large walk-in pantry and seamless flow into the family room and breakfast nook — all with beautiful views out the back.

We had been so focused on the layout transformation that I literally stopped in my tracks when the cabinets were installed. They are that beautiful. This home strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern — timeless, warm, and incredibly inviting.

At Thiessen Design + Construction, this is what we love most — taking a home from concept to completion. From solving complex structural challenges to designing the layout, building the space, and bringing every detail together, it’s about creating a home that truly works for the family living in it.

And that’s the best part… imagining this family cooking together at the island, a game on in the background, everyone connected and enjoying the space at the same time.

This one is definitely going down as a favorite.
