‼️ Freezing temps over the next 3 nights!

Cover or bring inside your tender or budding plants!

Please pay attention to the night time temps over the next three nights! If you have plants that are flowering or budding out due to the warm weather. They will be at risk of the oncoming frost!
And if you happen to have jumped the gun and purchased any annuals from anywhere... please cover them up at night or bring them indoors!

One of the early signs of spring over here in zone 5b

The herb spiral awakens!

I installed this spiral last fall using homemade compost, rocks harvested from all over NH (some of which contain crystals and gemstones), and seaweed from NH shores as mulch.

Some plants peeking out already are lavender, mullein, chives, allium, sedums, thyme!

BIG NIGHT potential for amphibians!!

PLEASE consider refraining from driving tonight after dark if you can, you will be saving countless lives! Seriously, so many! And they matter!!

Did you know some salamanders like the yellow spotted can live for 20-30 years! They have unique spot patterns allowing for recognition and documentation of their yearly crossings. Some salamanders in Keene have been reported to be aided in their crossing over 10+ years!

YOU HAVE MORE IMPACT THAN YOU KNOW.
Please consider your impact and don't drive if you don't have to tonight.

Also, many people (trained) with this passion wait for these big nights to jump to action and assist. Their may be people out tonight participating along roadsides in our town (I'll be out there) so if you must drive, please be mindful and slow down.

Thank you for reading!

** especially relevant on roads that have vernal pools or wetlands on one side and a forested hillside on the other **

HAPPIEST OF DAYS! WELCOME SPRING ❤️
Despite being in a colder climate, there are numerous signs that spring has sprung. Emerging from beneath the snow are greening rosettes, little bulbs poking through, and so many beautiful rocks that have surfaced from frost heaving. The birds are beginning to arrive and the red maple buds are moments from bursting!

Things to keep in mind this spring

*slow and and enjoy the signs of awakening* we will all be hustle and bustle before you know it.

*respect the timing of mama earth* let the critters and plants wake up on their own time, they know what they need best.
- Don't tidy your beds until AT LEAST 1 whole week of 50 degree nights has occurred. Minumum. These critters are protected in your beds and the moment you tidy up is the moment you're leading them to vulnerability and potential death. This matters on so many levels bigger than us. Please respect these beings and their needs.
- Start seeds or pot up bare root plants indoors to help scratch that itch until the appropriate time comes to begin spring clean.

So much to be excited for :) what are you most looking forward to this spring?

I cannot wait for the spring amphibian migration!! I'll be posting about that 🐸🙌 as they emerge and I learn how to be a part of the amazing teams of people helping these critters cross busy roads safely.

Identifying trees during the winter can be a challenge. Join UNH Cooperative Extension Foresters on March 9th in Alstead to learn some of our cold-weather “ID Tips and Tricks.” We will focus on bark, buds, and branching, and we will go over some of our favorite books and smartphone apps as well. Be prepared for an easy two-hour walk in the woods. Be sure to dress appropriately, wear warm boots, and bring any snacks and drinks that you may need. Because parking is limited, we will limit registration to 15 people, so be sure to sign up soon! https://extension.unh.edu/event/2026/03/tree-shrub-winter-identification-workshop
