70 MPH in West Virginia isn’t a speed limit.
It’s a polite suggestion carved into a mountain that absolutely does not care about your plans.
You start your drive thinking it’s simple.
Just a “quick trip” down I-77.
Ten minutes later you’re climbing a grade so steep your engine is negotiating its life choices.
Do 70?
You’re basically on a scenic tour.
A coal truck just passed you uphill doing 84 like physics signed a waiver.
Try 65?
Immediate problem.
A lifted F-250 materializes out of pure Appalachian fog, headlights bright enough to illuminate three hollers and your entire ancestry. He’s two inches off your bumper like you personally delayed deer season.
Push 80?
Congratulations.
Somewhere behind a rock wall, perfectly blended into the terrain, a State Trooper just phased into existence.
You didn’t see him.
You never do.
One second it’s trees and guardrail.
Next second it’s blue lights reflecting off a mountainside and you reconsidering every decision you’ve made since saying, “It’s just down the road.”
And let’s talk construction.
Not working.
Just… existing.
Orange barrels aging like family heirlooms.
One lane closed for “bridge repair” that started when flip phones were still cool.
Another randomly becomes EXIT ONLY halfway through a blind curve.
No warning.
Just elevation and consequences.
Then the weather joins the group chat.
Sunny in Huntington.
Fog in Charleston.
Snow in Beckley.
All within 40 miles.
You leave your house in a hoodie.
Halfway through the drive you’re in a blizzard.
By the next exit it’s clear skies and you’re questioning reality.
Half the drivers crawl at 45 with hazard lights blinking like it’s a Christmas parade.
The other half treat every curve like it’s a qualifying lap at Motor Mile Speedway.
Semi trucks spray salt mist like holy water.
A 2003 rusted Silverado passes everyone because “four-wheel drive means chosen.”
Some guy in camo shorts in February is doing 82 like winter is just a rumor.
And on the shoulder…
a deer.
Not startled.
Not confused.
Just watching.
Judging.
Waiting for cinematic timing.
