Lisa Lawson Artworks LISA LAWSON WATERCOLORS - Specializing in painting florals and botanicals. I paint flowers because I find them miraculous in every way.

My primary focus has been on the challenging task of painting the effects of light through translucent subjects such as flowers. I have spent numerous hours in and around Lexington gardens, including my own extensive gardens gathering inspiration for my paintings. I never tire of the way they look, feel and smell. I have always been particularly fascinated with capturing just a small part of the

whole flower leaving the rest to the imagination. My painting technique is primarily “wet- into-wet.” This technique involves wetting the section I am working on with clear water and dropping in the colors allowing them to mix and mingle. Over the years I have discovered that the best way to paint with watercolor is to allow it to do what it does best...work with water.

When I was young, barely out of my 20's, I discovered a wonderful watercolor artist, Susan Harrison-Tustain. I was so eager to learn how to paint I would peruse the art section of the book stores looking for "how to paint" books. I bought many in those early years but only one of those books bought back then is still on my desk to this day. Susan was amazing 30 years ago, but now, she is the master. I've had dreams of studying with her for so many years but it never seemed like a possibility to me. She is in Australia and her workshops and travel so expensive. Well...fast forward to this crazy corona virus changing the world and everyone having to adapt. I have just signed up for a 3 month course that Susan is now offering online. It will be a one on one, tailor made to my needs. Oh my goodness I am so excited! I feel like I'm going to college.

Hands down, I’ve never worked so hard to prepare for a blog post as I have for this red watercolor comparison. There are a LOT of red watercolors on the market, but that doesn’t mean you should paint with them. Many reds should be avoided because they can be highly impermanent or ultra finicky d...

After a long break from painting, I've picked up my brush again. I've always struggled with clean fresh color using watercolor. I've been thinking about doing some grayscale paintings for value only. This is an old painting that I never liked until I took the color out. I may try this one first.
