New blog out today (link in bio) sharing the highlights of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Such a treat to be at the show again this year, and even the cold weather could not spoil the fun. Full of inspirational gardens, people and plants, I returned to my garden excited to try out new ideas. The most joyous thing about the day is meeting fellow gardeners/growers/artists and sharing stories. Everyone is so incredibly open, friendly and willing to connect to learn and encourage each other.

If you get chance, go take a trip one year. In the meantime, read the blog to learn about my key takeaway’s. Link in the bio. Happy Sunday ❤️

Home visiting friends and family in the UK this week. Happy to report as always Mum, John and I headed straight to the local plant nursery to buy Mum some summer annuals for her garden. I was so impressed by the messaging in amongst the plants about the benefits to our mental health of gardening, and the need to plant for wildlife. Simply and beautifully communicated and so important.

Our trip to the nursery on a cold and windy May day in England helped lift the spirits, as we connected with the abundance of plants, smells, colors and textures around us. Shopping was followed by a cup of tea, a chuckle or two and a catch up on our respective gardening adventures these past few months.

I live 3,500 miles away from Mum, but our shared love of gardens and nature brings us straight back together in a moment. Go take a look at what’s happening in your local plant nursery this week, it’s guaranteed to make your day better.

Today I want to do a shout out to my pop up greenhouse. Whilst I plot out where to put our permanent greenhouse, this year Richard and I got creative and ordered a reusable pop up PVC self assembly greenhouse directly by the house. It’s been a game changer. Not only has it meant my seeds have had a permanent warm home to spring to life, it’s been shelter on a cold or wet day to keep gardening, a prep area for cutting and packing tulips and a storage area for tools. It’s also been a joy every morning I am in CT to unzip the door and take in that unique intoxicating, earthy aroma of intense plant growth and aromatic foliage. If you’re a fellow gardener you will know exactly what I mean! If you aren’t, then go get yourself a mini greenhouse! 😍

Happy Mother’s Day to all the American moms. My mum turns 90 this year, and is my gardening inspiration. The plant nursery, a garden tour or time spent gardening is always on the agenda when we spend time together. My earliest memory of gardening is her greenhouse packed full of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers and her love of creating hanging baskets and beautiful containers full of summer annuals in our English garden. We even used to watch Wimbledon on a tiny portable tv in the garden because Mum always wanted to be in the garden. Mum, and her husband John, still grow their own summer vegetables from seed. We talk about Gardeners World every week, share photos of our latest favorite plants and plot our next garden visit.

Thanks Mum for sharing your love of plants, the outdoors and the joy of gardening. Happy Mother’s Day everyone.

Which is your favorite? The tulips have survived a week of freezing temperatures, travels to NYC (and back), close investigation and finally sunshine. They brought smiles to friends who took part in some lighthearted trials to identify favorite colors/blooms and vase life. Now it’s your turn. Which is your favorite? Each variety is listed in the order of the photos. Vote for your favorite by commenting below. The first 3 votes win a YGS tote bag 🌷.

Verona - buttery yellow, double
Blue Diamond - lavender purple, double, lightly fragrant
Finola - cream, edged with pink, blousy double
White Emperor - ivory with yellow center, single
Margarita - deep pink, layered blooms, fragrant
Dreamer - pale pink, double blooms, shorter stems

I honestly can’t decide! They are all dreamy, peony like blooms that look amazing as cut flowers. Maybe I’ll just order them all again for next year 😂

Happy Earth Day 💚 Do something today, and every day to show the earth you appreciate it. There is a wonderful Pollinator Garden Tool kit on the Earth Day hub, link in the bio. Did you know nearly all plant life relies on pollination? You don’t need a garden, a window ledge, balcony or deck will do. Start with native plant combinations in a container or go plant a pollinator garden. Let’s all become gardeners and make this world greener.

This week the Story family has been foraging in nature and creating festive displays on both sides of the Atlantic. The tradition was a way of life for our ancestors and it has returned to popularity. Without realizing both our daughter Amy who lives in Folkestone, England, and I went looking in nature for greens to make festive decorations. Real team work was involved in Folkestone with Amy and her friends gathering decorations from previous years, greens found in the garden and orange slices and cinnamon stick’s baked in the oven at home. Other than moss and pine boughs from the florist, everything else was recycled or sourced for free. Look how beautiful they are and how much fun they had. A festive drink or two along the way also helped the creativity!

Back in CT, my team was Lily and I. We walked the garden to find boughs of pine and juniper, cut some stems from the beautiful golden Japanese forest grass and Summer sweet bush and added bronzed hydrangea blooms. Finally I rummaged in the basement for pine cones and decorations from previous years. The Bergs Potter Copenhagen pots add to the rustic look. These are the same pots I use in the summer. You can take out the annuals that are spent, keep the cut back perennials and decorate around them.

One of the most enjoyable things about foraging is the way it inspires a greater awareness of nature. As soon as you step outside you are forced to slow down, pause and really look. The process of seeing what’s in your garden gets us out into the sunshine, reminds us winter is the time for rest and renewal and for me, it makes me truly appreciate how the garden sustains me throughout the year.
